About the MTA

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is North America's largest transportation network, serving a population of 15.3 million people across a 5,000-square-mile travel area surrounding New York City, Long Island, southeastern New York State, and Connecticut. The MTA network comprises the nation’s largest bus fleet and more subway and commuter rail cars than all other U.S. transit systems combined.

Our strategic priorities

We are committed to maintaining a transit system that is safe, reliable, and accessible for all. We’re investing in systemwide improvements that will keep our transit system running smoothly for decades to come. And we’re continuously working on ways to improve our own operations in ways that support our core values of equity, accessibility, sustainability, and cost-consciousness.

The Authority is led by Chair and CEO Janno Lieber, along with a world-class management team. Learn more about our executive leadership.

The MTA is governed by a 23-member Board. Voting members are nominated by the governor, New York City's mayor, and the county executives of the counties serving the MTA's service area.

Agencies and departments

The MTA's operating agencies are New York City Transit, Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North Railroad, and Bridges and Tunnels. Construction & Development supports these agencies by identifying, developing, and building the capital infrastructure projects needed to renew and enhance the MTA’s extensive assets.

MTA ridership and performance

Transparency

In keeping with our public mission, the MTA reports regularly on legislative, financial, and governance issues. This includes detailed information about MTA agencies’ performance data; operating and capital budgets; public meetings and hearings; open data resources; bonds, notes, and securities; and revenue information.
