One of four new LIRR off-street GCT entrances between 44th and 48th streets. The ESA project has generated excitement from New Yorks political and transportation leaders. Heres what some of them are saying: "The East Side Access project is crucial to the continued vitality
of the entire New York metropolitan region. Penn Station alone cannot
meet the growing demand for hundreds of thousands of railroad commuters
who need access to the East Side of Manhattan. The East Side Access
project will increase the LIRRs capacity to Manhattan by 45
percent." "With the award of the contract for building Highbridge Yard,
we have put the shovel in the ground and have actually begun construction
of the much needed East Side Access project. In the near future, contracts
will be awarded that will be the initial phases of the Manhattan and
Queens tunneling work so the LIRR service to Grand Central Terminal
can begin in 2012." |
