Project Description


	The Second Avenue Subway will be New York City’s first major expansion of the subway system in over 50 years. When fully completed, the line will stretch 8.5 miles along the length of Manhattan's East Side, from 125th Street in Harlem to Hanover Square in Lower Manhattan. In addition, a track connection to the existing 63rd Street and Broadway Lines, will allow a second subway line to provide direct service from East Harlem and the Upper East Side to West Midtown via the Broadway express tracks. 		Subway Service
		The Second Avenue Subway will provide two services to customers. The new train will run generally under Second Avenue from 125th Street to Hanover Square; a second service (an extension of the existing train) will operate from 125th Street under Second Avenue and connect to the 63rd Street Line and the Broadway express tracks, using an existing track connection between the 63rd Street Line and the Broadway Line. The will then continue along the Broadway Line express tracks and the Manhattan Bridge into Brooklyn.

	Stations
	16 new stations will be built, serving communities in Harlem, Upper East Side, East Midtown, Gramercy Park, East Village, the Lower East Side, Chinatown and Lower Manhattan. The new stations will also provide transfers to other subway and commuter rail lines:

All of the stations will have escalator and elevator access including access for the disabled, and will feature climate control features to maximize customer comfort.


	Construction Phasing
	The Second Avenue Subway is being planned in four phases. The four phases, which could potentially overlap, are as follows:

	Phase 1: Construction will occur from 105th Street to 72nd Street, including the tunnel connection to the 63rd Street/Broadway Line, and will use an existing tunnel section from 99th-105th Sts; subway service will operate from 96th Street to West Midtown Manhattan and Brooklyn via the Broadway Line. When completed, service on Phase One will be provided by an extension of the train from its current terminal at 57 St – 7 Av to the new 96 St – 2 Av station, via an existing tunnel under Central Park and 63rd St, and new tunnel construction from the Lexington Ave station to and under 2nd Ave. Intermediate stops will be made at Lexington Ave-63rd St, and at 72nd St and 86th St under 2nd Ave. Construction of Phase One began in April 2007 and is scheduled to be completed in 2015. 	Phase 2: Construction will occur from 125th Street to 105th Street, including the utilization of an existing subway tunnel section from 110th – 120th Streets; subway service will be provided from 125th Street to West Midtown Manhattan and Brooklyn via a further extension of the train (Broadway Line).

	Phase 3: Construction will occur from 72nd Street to Houston Street; subway service will continue to be provided by the train from 125th Street to West Midtown Manhattan and Brooklyn via the Broadway Line, as well as a new train from 125th Street to Houston Street and 2nd Ave.

	Phase 4: Construction will occur from Houston Street to Hanover Square; subway service will continue to be provided by the train from 125th Street to West Midtown Manhattan and Brooklyn via the Broadway Line, and via a southward extension of the train to the Hanover Square station in Lower Manhattan
