MTA Bus Company Data
The MTA Bus Company was created in 2004-2006 to consolidate and improve operations of about 80 routes (see box at right) that had been operated by seven private companies subsidized by the City of New York. These companies had each operated between five and 22 routes. They maintained schedule information separately from one another using different methods, with separate, proprietary databases, not all of which were computerized, and none of it in an digital format that was compatible with the remainder of the MTA effort. As a result, unlike New York City Transit's Department of Buses, the MTA Bus Company had no centralized and uniform database that was convertible to GTFS.
The MTA Bus Company is working as quickly as possible to provide the same level of detail as New York City Transit. This is a very complicated, integrated undertaking that includes complete scheduling and payroll interface; well beyond just the production of GTFS data. MTA Bus has been moving on this since the start of 2011. We expect to have system capability by the middle of 2012 that will allow for conversion to GTFS. Until then, we are not able to improve on the data that we have presented here. Developers who wish to present MTA Bus Company schedule data to end users may wish to interpolate stop times from the stops that are given.
