The Long Island Rail Road is the busiest railroad in North America and was chartered in 1834, the LIRR carries an average of 288,000 passengers each weekday on 728 trains. In its history, the LIRR has served billions of customers taking them to and from work, home, school, sporting events, concerts and Broadway shows. To better serve its customers and the region into the 21st century, the LIRR has made many improvements including, diesel and dual mode locomotives, upgrades to diesel territory, stations and yards; the transformation of Penn Station; and replacement of the Reynold s Channel Bridge in Long Beach. Current projects include new M-7 electric train cars; the overhauling of existing cars; station upgrades and cyclical replacement of tracks, ties and switches to ensure a smooth ride. A few facts: The LIRR serves Nassau, Suffolk, Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan; 93.3% of our trains were on time in 2006; we have 124 stations; 1,060 rail cars; 701 miles of track; 82 million people rode the LIRR in 2006 and we have more than 6,000 employees.

In addition to meeting the minimum requirements of the position, the selection process may include, but is not limited to, a pre-screening assessment (i.e. physical, written and/ or practical evaluation) and interview. Candidates forfeit further consideration in the process if they fail to participate in any step of the process when scheduled. Make up dates/times will not be given. In addition, LIRR employee applicants must be in their current position for the 12 months immediately preceding the close date of this posting and must possess a satisfactory work history, including attendance, safety and discipline record. Not all qualified applicants are guaranteed an interview due to the competitive selection process. A background investigation, medical examination and safety sensitive drug/alcohol test may also be required.
