The Main Line Corridor Improvements Project

Introduction

The MTA Long Island Rail Road's proposed Main Line Corridor Improvements Project is an initiative that is vitally important to LIRR customers and provides both safety and convenience benefits to the communities along the 11.5-mile rail corridor between Queens Village and Hicksville.

Improvements under consideration include elimination of grade crossings, improvements to bridges and stations and the addition of a third track.

The elimination of grade crossings will enhance safety for surrounding communities and will relieve aggravating traffic congestion currently experienced by motorists because of gate down time. Fewer grade crossings will also mean less noise — as train horns will not have to be sounded as often.

Bridge and station improvements will enhance the appearance of communities along the Main Line.

An additional track will address the LIRR's long-term plans to increase Peak train service and provide more frequent Reverse Peak and local service through this area. With better commuting options, these communities will become more attractive to young, working homebuyers and may help keep Long Island's youth here at home.
