LIRR Gets You To NYC For Holiday Fun
There is no place quite like New York City during the holidays and we offer special deals to get you there without the hassle of driving andparking. To kick it all off we are hosting a special event taking place at Penn Station on November 16. At 3:30 PM, Radio City Rockettes® will conduct a teaching demonstration for a Long Island dance group. From 4 PM to 6:30 PM, the Penn Station Holiday Open House takes place. Among the visitors will be Captain Hook® from Peter Pan®, holiday music and entertainment from Broadway show talent from My Sinatra & Voca People along with Dicken’s characters from Port Jefferson Village.
There will also be a raffle for tickets to NYC holiday shows and the LIRR spinning wheel with more prizes from participating merchants. All events will take place at the 34th Street Corridor. While we’re in the holiday spirit, here’s a reminder about two LIRR packages for special holiday shows. Mention code “LIRR” when you order full-price tickets to select performances of the Radio City Christmas Spectacular® and for each ticket you purchase you’ll save $10 and receive a free round-trip LIRR rail ticket. And if you miss Wonderland, there’s Peter Pan® at the Theater at Madison Square Garden.
Mention code “LIRRPP” when you order tickets to select performances and for each ticket you purchase you’ll save $10 and receive a free round-trip LIRR rail ticket. For further information on both of these LIRR packages go to www.mta.info/getaways.
Extra Thanksgiving Service, Nov. 23 & Nov. 24
The LIRR will help kick off the busy winter holiday season with additional Thanksgiving service. On Thanksgiving eve, nine additional trains will depart Penn Station between 2:08 PM and 3:48 PM. On Thanksgiving Day, there will be nine additional westbound trains to Penn Station and thirteen additional eastbound trains from Penn Station, after the parade. Check www.mta.info for extra service details or call 511. Remember, purchase round trip tickets and MetroCards in advance in order to save time and avoid lines at ticket windows and ticket machines.
Open alcoholic beverage containers will not be allowed on LIRR trains, train stations or on platforms from 8 PM, November 23 through 5 AM, November 24. The LIRR will operate on a regular weekday schedule on Friday, November 25, but off-peak fares will be in effect all day, making it more economical to travel to the City for shopping and events. Have a joyous and safe holiday.
Smoke Free Environment
Reminder
As of November 13 smoking is prohibited at LIRR outdoor platforms, boarding and ticketing areas at all stations and terminals. The amendment of the NY Public Health Law, which also applies to Metro-North, was signed into law this past August by Governor Cuomo. Smoking had already been prohibited at all indoor LIRR locations and on board trains.
Getting Ready for Winter
Don’t let the recent spell of mild weather fool you. We aren’t letting it fool us. Preparations are on-going to winterize the LIRR, its infrastructure and equipment. We are stocking up on and deploying snow melter, preparing snow fighting equipment, plows, shovels and fuel. We’re also making additional snow and ice scraper shoes for trains that help to knock ice off of the third rail. We ask that you do your part by giving yourself extra time to get where you have to go, slowing down (especially during icy conditions) and by keeping yourself informed. We know that communication is extremely important to you, especially for your winter weather commute.
Be sure you’re subscribed to our e-mail alert system (check out mymtaalerts.com if you’re not signed up), check the mta website, contact 511 for LIRR for travel information and tune in to local TV and radio reports. While we will work to keep train service operating on all of our branches for as long as possible, it may be necessary to temporarily suspend train service when snow accumulation reaches between 10 and 13 inches to avoid stranding trains and for the safety of our customers and employees. Look for our Alternative Transportation Brochure/map that will soon be available at terminals and stations. It’s full of handy tips to get you home using existing bus routes from Jamaica. For instance, did you know you can take the N22 bus from the 165th Street Jamaica Terminal to Hicksville?
Escalator Safety
It’s November and since this month is "Escalator Safety Month," along with our reminder to exercise safety and pay attention when using our escalators, we thought it would be appropriate to bring to your attention some interesting (at least we thought so) facts about this device.
- Nathan Ames, a patent lawyer from Saugus, Massachusetts, is credited with patenting the first “escalator” in 1859, despite the fact that no working model of his design was ever built.
- Charles Seeberger trademarked the word "escalator" in 1900, to coincide with his device’s debut at the Exposition Universelle.
Now that you know some escalator background history, please don’t forget to respect this historic invention and play it safe on and around it, especially at our stations and terminals. Please hold thehands of young children, especially while entering and exiting escalators. Also, put hand-held devices aside during your time on escalators. It deserves your full attention.
+selectbusservice
On November 13, 2011, the M34 (East Side-Javits Center) and M16 (Waterside-Port Authority Bus Terminal) became the M34 and M34A Select Bus Service. This innovative service with dedicated bus-only lanes, camera enforced traffic control, and off-board fare collection will make your trip up to 20% faster at no extra cost. You help make the trip faster when you pay your fare at the bus stop using either the MetroCard or Coin machine. Each machine dispenses a ticket/receipt as proof of payment. When the bus arrives, just board through any door, and enjoy your ride. Just be sure to keep your receipt for the duration of your trip as fare inspectors randomly check for them, and you should be prepared to show it if asked. In the event machines aren’t working, just call 511 to report the problem and tell the bus driver when you get on the bus. For more information on the new Select Bus Service, visit mta.info or pick up a brochure on M34 and M34A buses.
