A Day on the Hudson
Through September 30, 2009
Saturdays and Sundays

The experience

It’s not just one destination, it’s three great family excursions, all for one low price! All three attractions are a short walk from the Yonkers train station, so visit them in whatever order you like, take your time exploring, and make a day of it. Check here for a list of the events happening at all three venues.

Beczak Environmental Education Center Beczak Environmental Education Center offers a hands-on river experience for all ages. This indoor/outdoor interpretive center is one of the only places in the Lower Hudson River Valley that encourages you to get into the water and see firsthand what lives there. Every weekend Beczak educators run Catch of the Day Seining. They provide chest waders to keep you dry and show you how to drag a 30' x 3' fishing net through the river. Catches include white perch, striped bass, American eels, blue crabs, hogchokers, and more. Touch and learn about each before releasing them back into the river. The schedule varies depending on the tides: visit www.beczak.org or call 914-377-1900. Come, and “touch the river.”

The Science Barge

The Science Barge (brought to you by Groundwork Hudson Valley) is a solar/wind-powered floating museum and greenhouse whose exhibits and educational programs showcase hydroponic, sustainable urban farming. This unique facility, proof that our food supply needn’t depend on chemical pesticides nor fill the atmosphere with carbon emissions, will give you hope for the future. For more information and the full schedule of programs covering everything from growing the best tomato to solar cooking, visit www.groundworkhv.org or call 914-375-2151. And prepare to be amazed!.

Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site The original room of Philipse Manor Hall State Historic Site is the oldest surviving structure in Westchester County. Construction was begun c.1682 by Frederick Philipse, whose vast estate spanned 52,000 acres and included today’s entire city of Yonkers. His descendants were Loyalists (British sympathizers) and the property was confiscated after the Revolutionary War. In the ensuing two centuries, the magnificent house sheltered numerous families, and even served as Yonkers City Hall. Today the Manor is a National Historic Landmark and museum dedicated to art, history, and architecture, with a full schedule of educational tours and special events. Find out more at www.friendspmh.org call 914-965-4027 or visit our events blog at www.philipsemanorhall.blogspot.com.
