Walk a Mile in Your Shoes...
HIKING!
Year-round
Take a hike. Really... we mean it! Metro-North makes it easy for you to get to some of the most beautiful trails in our territory. For more information about hiking in the area, call New York-New Jersey Trail Conference at 201-512-9348 or visit www.nynjtc.org.
Harlem Line
If you like to hike on weekends and holidays, some Harlem Line trains leaving Grand Central Terminal stop at the Appalachian Trail Station. There's also easy access to the trail from the Harlem Valley-Wingdale Station.
The Harlem Valley Rail Trail offers bikers, walkers, runners, roller bladers, cross-country skiers, and those looking for a day in the country an opportunity to discover and enjoy the magnificent scenery of Dutchess county. The paved trail starts at Metro-North’s Wassaic Station and extends 10.5 miles north to the Village of Millerton. Dutchess County is working with New York State Parks, New York State Department of Transportation, and Columbia County to extend the trail 8.25 miles north into Columbia County. For more information about the trail, call either Dutchess County Department of Public Works at 845-486-2121 or the Harlem Valley Rail Trail Association at 518-789-9591; or visit www.hvrt.org.
Hudson Line
On weekends and holidays, some Hudson Line trains from Grand Central will stop at Manitou Station (located about 1.5 miles from the Bear Mountain Bridge) and Breakneck Ridge. There are also regular hourly stops at Garrison and Cold Spring Stations, offering direct access to an extensive network of hiking trails in the east Hudson Highlands.
The Old Croton Aqueduct is a 26-mile level footpath atop the masonry tunnel that first brought clean water to New York in 1842. The path winds through green landscapes, architectural treasures, and historic sites. Although the easiest access to the trail is from Greystone or Dobbs Ferry stations, there is convenient access from all Metro-North stations from Greystone through Ossining. And it is possible to begin your journey at one rail station, end it at another, and use Metro-North to return without retracing your steps! Call the manager of the Old Croton Aqueduct at 914-693-5259 for more information. Or visit the New York State Parks at www.nysparks.com. Trail maps may be purchased from The Friends of the Old Croton Aqueduct at 914-693-4117 or visit www.aqueduct.org
