One-Day (Outbound) Getaways
![]() It's not just one destination, it's two great family excursions, all for one low price! Both attractions are a short walk from the Yonkers train station, so visit them in whatever order you like, take your time exploring, and make a day of it.
Beczak Environmental Education Center offers a hands-on river experience for all ages. This indoor/outdoor interpretive center is one of the only places in the Lower Hudson River Valley that encourages you to get into the water and see firsthand what lives there. Every weekend Beczak educators run a hands-on nature program such as River Explorers, Fish Tales and Catch of the Day Seining. They provide chest waders to keep you dry and show you how to drag a 30' x 3' fishing net through the river. Catches include white perch, striped bass, American eels, blue crabs, hogchokers, and more. Touch and learn about each before releasing them back into the river.
The Science Barge (brought to you by Groundwork Hudson Valley) is a solar/wind-powered floating museum and greenhouse whose exhibits and educational programs showcase hydroponic, sustainable urban farming. This unique facility, proof that our food supply needn't depend on chemical pesticides nor fill the atmosphere with carbon emissions, will give you hope for the future.
