Service Alternatives...

In the event of a major service disruption, MTA Metro-North Railroad will develop alternative service plans as quickly as possible. We will communicate these plans via "service alerts" on our web site and through local media.

Often, these plans require us to send personnel to help direct customers to new locations and to assist with crowd control.

During a service disruption, we always suggest that you wait until a recommended alternative service plan is developed and announced on our web site or through the media.

We realize, though, that there are some customers who may wish to explore other service alternatives independently. Information on some of these services is provided below:

Subways
During an emergency, Grand Central Terminal may be closed to trains. Customers may be asked to board or detrain in the Bronx. Several Metro-North Stations are within walking distance of NYC Transit subway lines. The following directions should help inbound customers find these subway lines. (Directions can be reversed for outbound travel.)

Buses

Remember: While there are some buses that serve our stations, buses can never replicate train service. Buses have an average of 53 seats per vehicle. One of our train cars can carry twice that number, and our trains are usually comprised of 4 - 10 train cars.

Among the bus companies providing service into Midtown Manhattan are:
From Poughkeepsie, Newburgh (nr. Beacon), Suffern, Spring Valley, Orange

  • CountyCoach USA
  • From Danbury (nr. Brewster), Waterbury

  • Bonanza/Peter Pan
  • From Stamford, Bridgeport, New Haven

  • Greyhound
  • From White Plains (also Central Avenue in Westchester; East Yonkers, Bronxville - White Plains)

  • WCDOT Bee-Line Bus - via Route BXM4C
