The Metropolitan Transportation Authority has announced that Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroads are seeing record ridership numbers, with LIRR carrying 89.3 million customers in 2016, a 1.9% increase over last year and the highest ridership since 1949. Metro-North Railroad carried approximately 86.5 million in 2016, the highest ridership in Metro-North’s history.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) will host a series of jointly held interactive public workshops next month to engage communities in Manhattan and Brooklyn that will be affected by the previously announced repairs to the Canarsie Tunnel on the L line.

The MTA is testing two prototypes of powerful – but portable -- track vacuum systems that can be quickly deployed, operated from platforms, and moved easily from one station to the next. The new units are part of the MTA’s ongoing Track Sweep initiative, which is a multi-pronged plan to dramatically reduce the amount of trash on subway tracks, in the process improving the station environment, and reducing track fires and train delays. The prototype units are both powered by Lithium iron phosphate batteries with a battery management system that protects the batteries and load from over current, and both can be moved from station to station on a conventional revenue train.

There will be six public hearings this week on the LIRR Expansion Project, a new proposal to improve service options and reliability for hundreds of thousands of customers, reduce automobile traffic congestion, and improve safety and quality of life for people in the project corridor. Experts will be on hand to outline the benefits of the project and the public is invited to give their feedback.

Off-peak fares will apply all day.

In observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s Birthday, Metro-North Railroad will operate on an enhanced Saturday schedule on Monday, January 16, 2017, that includes 35 additional trains. The enhanced Saturday service includes 14 extra trains on the Harlem Line, including one additional Wassaic connection, 3 Hudson Line extras, and 15 extra New Haven Line trains offering branch connections. For West of Hudson customers, there will be 3 additional trains on the Port Jervis Line. Off-peak fares apply all day.

MTA Long Island Rail Road is advising customers to expect train cancelations and delays during today’s afternoon rush hour while Amtrak crews work to repair a broken rail found outside one of Amtrak’s East River Tunnels. Personnel are on the site of the broken rail but do not expect to have repairs completed by the start of the afternoon rush hour. New York City Transit is cross-honoring LIRR tickets at on the [E] Subway subway line at Jamaica (Sutphin Blvd-Archer Av), Kew Gardens (Union Tpke) and Forest Hills (71st Av) stops. At Woodside, NYC Transit is cross-honoring LIRR tickets on the  Subway line (Woodside-61st St). Westbound trains will terminate at Jamaica.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has unveiled a proposal to invest $160 million in transformative projects on Long Island. Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has announced that cell phone coverage in underground subway stations will be available a full year ahead of schedule, with all four carriers AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless, present across underground stations as of Monday, January 9. In addition, Wi-Fi has been installed in underground stations a full two years ahead of schedule. The MTA’s early delivery was in response to the Governor’s directive at the beginning of 2016 to accelerate the project.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo debuted the new Second Avenue Subway station at 86th Street on December 30, 2016. The Governor also announced that a new entrance to the subway has opened at 63rd Street and 3rd Avenue, enabling MTA customers to begin accessing the F Subway line immediately, and the Second Avenue Subway Q Subway Train when service begins at Noon on Sunday, and unveiled the new artwork at the station.

MTA Bridges and Tunnels will suspend all lane closures related to routine maintenance and temporary construction work for the New Year’s Eve weekend, through the end of the morning rush on Tuesday, January 3, 2017, to accommodate motorists traveling throughout the weekend. Exceptions are the ongoing Fast Track Sandy Restoration work at the Queens Midtown Tunnel and at the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel. At least one lane in each direction will always remain open at both tunnels. Motorists can ease their trip by using E-ZPass.

Ring in 2017 with Metro-North! The railroad is offering expanded service to and from Grand Central Terminal all day long on December 31 and into the early morning hours of New Year's Eve for celebrants traveling to Times Square and other spots in the Big Apple. Metro-North reminds customers that drinking alcohol on trains and at our stations is banned from noon New Year's Eve until noon New Year's Day. If traveling after midnight on New Year’s Eve, customers should buy tickets in advance. On the night of New Year’s Eve, tickets will be collected prior to boarding trains at Grand Central Terminal.
