Governor Andrew M. Cuomo debuted the new station at 96th Street on December 22, 2016, in advance of the historic, on-time opening of the Second Avenue Subway. At the event, the Governor invited New Yorkers to an open house for a preview tour of the station, which features high ceilings, column-free design, vibrant lighting, and world-class contemporary artwork. The open house marks the first time the public will have access to the Second Avenue Subway since the start of construction. The words "Excelsior" and "E Pluribus Unum" – New York’s message to people who ride the subways in New York – are displayed on the beams inside of the station.

The MTA has announced some holly jolly schedules for the upcoming long holiday weekend. Also for holiday travelers, as part of the Port Authority’s measures to alleviate roadway congestion at LaGuardia Airport during the Peak Holiday Travel Rush, the MTA’s LaGuardia Link Q70 Select Bus Service will be fare free on Thursday, December 22, and Friday, December 23. The LaGuardia Link provides non-stop service linking the main terminals of the airport (Terminals B, C and D) with New York City Subway hub at Jackson Heights (with connections to the 7, e, f, m, and r lines) and the Long Island Rail Road hub in Woodside, Queens.

MTA Long Island Rail Road is adding 13 trains to its regular eastbound afternoon schedule from Penn Station on Friday, December 23, to accommodate the large number of customers leaving work early to get a head start on their holiday weekend. The additional service from Penn Station will be provided between 12:43 p.m. and 3:41 p.m. on the Ronkonkoma, Babylon, Port Jefferson, Port Washington and Far Rockaway branches. Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced high-speed open road, cashless tolling will be completed on all MTA-operated bridges and tunnels in the New York metropolitan region by the end of 2017, with automatic tolling beginning at the Hugh L. Carey and Queens Midtown Tunnels next month. The state will also deploy 150 State Troopers beginning in January at MTA bridges and tunnels to enhance security at key checkpoints, bolster counter-terrorism efforts and hold scofflaws accountable.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has announced the installation of more than 12,600 new in-car subway maps and approximately 1,000 large station maps featuring the new Second Avenue Subway line. In preparation for the on-time arrival of the Second Avenue Subway on December 31, installation of the new maps featuring the route on the system’s 6,300 cars began over the weekend. The inaugural ride on the Second Avenue Subway will be on December 31 and revenue service will begin at noon on January 1.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has unveiled the largest permanent public art installation in New York State history in conjunction with the grand opening of Phase I of the Second Avenue Subway. The Second Avenue Subway marks the city’s first major expansion project in more than 50 years, with three new handicap-accessible stations along Second Avenue at 96th Street, 86th Street and 72nd Street, and new entrances to the existing Lexington Av/63rd Street Station at 63rdStreet and Third Avenue. The Governor made the announcement at The Museum of Modern Art.

MTA Arts & Design has installed a new digital artwork at Fulton Center by Brooklyn-based digital mixed media artist Anne Spalter as Arts & Design expands its audience by presenting new, innovative digital work to MTA customers. Titled New York Dreaming, the new digital artwork is a meditation on the city and the constant self-realization of its physical and psychic existence. New York is a city like no other, a combination of man-made and natural formations, perpetually evolving and reinventing itself--turning from one year to the next, unfolding. Its citizens, similarly, are dreamers, driven to bring their visions to life.

MTA Long Island Rail Road plans to install a new pedestrian overpass at Little Neck Station in Queens with work scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, December 2, and through the weekend with the new bridge ready for Monday’s morning rush. The project is not expected to impact train service.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the MTA has reached a major milestone to improve transit service, safety and quality of life for hundreds of thousands of Long Island commuters and residents. The LIRR Expansion Project released a Draft Environmental Impact Statement which will take the project another step toward construction. The scientific, engineering and socioeconomic study is required to identify any potential impacts of public construction projects and help ensure that they are done safely, responsibly, and with public input. The study’s findings demonstrate how the LIRR Expansion Project would improve service and reduce delays for Long Island Rail Road customers throughout the system, as well as improve safety and quality of life for local residents living in the project area in Nassau County.

From December 5 to 21, NYC Transit rolls into the holiday spirit with its annual tradition of vintage rides by running a fleet of historic coaches from river to river along 42nd Street in Manhattan. The buses make stops on the M42 route between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays, offering a variety of rides through the decades.

The MTA Metro-North Railroad today announced it has completed restoration and upgrades of the Fordham Station, including a rebuilt northbound platform with double the capacity, a new entrance leading directly to Webster Avenue at 193rd Street and new permanent artwork. These upgrades follow the complete renovation of the historic station building on Fordham Road, which was completed in 2014.
