The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today celebrated yet another milestone of New York City’s iconic subway commemorating the 100th anniversary of the opening of the first subway of the now defunct Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit Corporation (BMT). Absorbed by the New York City Transit system three-quarters of a century ago, the BMT lives on in the memories of seniors and MTA New York City Transit’s drive to improve the customer experience and increase capacity with the avid embrace of new technology.

The MTA and Operation Lifesaver, Inc., have formed a partnership to promote safety at Metro-North and LIRR railroad crossings and announced that their first initiative was an advertising campaign at the movies, on television, in newspapers, online and on outdoor signs to begin appearing tomorrow. The MTA also launched a new safety-focused section of its website, web.mta.info/safety, and social media hashtag #MTASafety.

An aboriginal didgeridoo, Chinese monochord and Celtic folk are among the variety of sounds you'll soon be hearing as you make your way around the MTA system. The acts were among 26 groups and performers accepted into the Music Under New York program (MTA MUSIC). The musicians were chosen from approximately 70 acts that performed before a panel of judges on May 19, 2015, at the program’s 28th annual auditions in Grand Central Terminal.

The Battery Parking Garage is a distinctive building with its name emblazoned in large letters on the side, looming over Greenwich Street. When it opened in 1950 it made history as the first parking garage in the city to be built by a public agency. Robert Moses, always a supporter of infrastructure for automobiles and parking, wrote that such facilities “can help immensely in serving local needs and in keeping the clutter of traffic off the busy City streets.”

MTA Bus Time™ is now a free, downloadable app. MTA The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has significantly upgraded , its live bus tracking service, by making it available as a free downloadable app for iOS and Android smartphone users. Additionally starting June 6, new time-based bus arrival information will be available for Bronx bus routes and will be available for bus routes in the other boroughs in the near future as the MTA moves forward with new ways to provide customers with real-time arrival information.

MTA New York City Transit has suspended [A] train service between Broad Channel and Rockaway Boulevard because of problems with third rail power near Howard Beach. Shuttle buses will replace the [A] train on this section until further notice.
