Construction for the $23.9 million modernization of the Long Island Rail Road’s Wantagh Station has begun. On Thursday, MTA Long Island Rail Road President Patrick A. Nowakowski marked the official start with a groundbreaking for the project made possible by the State of New York’s support for the MTA Capital Program as well as a $4 million contribution from Nassau County. Nowakowski was joined at groundbreaking ceremonies on Sunrise Highway by State Senator Michael Venditto, State Assemblyman David McDonough, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano, Nassau County Legislator Steve Rhoads, Town of Hempstead Councilwoman Erin King-Sweeney and Chris Brown, President of the Wantagh Chamber of Commerce. Also on hand was Barney Fortunato Jr. of Long Island-based Fortunato Sons Contracting, Inc., the primary contractor on a project expected to create 100 construction jobs.

Donald Spero has been named President of MTA Bridges and Tunnels. MTA Chairman and CEO Thomas F. Prendergast appointed Spero who had been serving as Acting President since August 2015. The appointment is effective immediately.

The Long Island Rail Road’s weekend service to Greenport and Long Island’s North Fork resumes Saturday, April 30, with trains running on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays through November 27. Surrounded by Peconic Bay and Long Island Sound, this part of the East End offers an easy-going, rural feel first noticed from the window of your LIRR double-decker train as it moves through a picturesque landscape that is the heart of Suffolk County’s wine country. There are more than 35 vineyards in this part of Long Island and the train trip takes you so close to the grapes that you actually transverse the Castello de Borghese Vineyard and its rural railroad crossing in the hamlet of Cutchogue.

MTA Bridges and Tunnels is wrapping up installation of new environmentally friendly LED lights at the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge, the last of the agency’s four suspended spans to upgrade its “necklace” light fixtures that are part of the bridges’ architectural features. Final programing for the controls of the recently installed LED lights is underway, but the view will be worth it when the lights go on permanently (see photo of recent test run).

Customers who have concerns about upcoming L train work will have a chance to speak their minds. The MTA has announced the first of two public meetings to discuss future reconstruction work on the Canarsie Tunnel, which carries the [L] train under the East River between Brooklyn and Manhattan. The first meeting will be held on Thursday, May 5 at 6 p.m. at the Marcy Avenue Armory at 355 Marcy Avenue in Brooklyn. A Manhattan-based public meeting to be held later in May will be announced soon.

Subway ridership is on an upward trend. Annual subway ridership increased 0.6% from 2014 to 2015 to 1.763 billion, the highest since 1948. Weekday ridership increased by 0.9% to 5.7 million, also the highest since 1948. Forty-nine weekdays in 2015 had over six million riders. Weekend subway ridership declined by 0.7% to 5.9 million, but is still among the highest since two-day weekends became nearly universal in the mid-20th century.

A new pedestrian and motor vehicle bridge over Long Island Rail Road tracks is now open to the public. Long Island Rail Road President Patrick A. Nowakowski was joined on Friday by State Senator Jack M. Martins, State Assemblyman Michael Montesano, Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano, Nassau County Legislator Laura Schaefer and Village of Westbury Mayor Peter I. Cavallaro for the opening of the new Ellison Ave. Bridge in Westbury, a $17.5 million project delivered by the LIRR right on schedule.
