Those looking to get a glimpse of the Pope when he's in town will have extra ways to get there. Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced there will be an increased number of trains and buses to support the expected amount of travelers during Pope Francis' visit. The MTA will also have additional crew on hand to coincide with the papal events.

Long Island Rail Road timetables will change on Tuesday, September 8, bringing better service and some temporary schedule adjustments related to track work. The timetables also allow for the railroad to run special trains to or from Atlantic Terminal in downtown Brooklyn for any event across the street at Barclays Center, including all home games of the New York Islanders.

Starting on Sunday, September 6, MTA New York City Transit will add bicycle racks on two Staten Island bus routes, the first time that such equipment has been made available for public use on NYC Transit. The yearlong Bike & Ride pilot will roll out on the S53 and S93 routes, which run between Staten Island and the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn over the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. The two lines were chosen for their safe access to current and planned bicycle paths, ridership and routes, which serve a major college campus where bicycling is a popular commuting option.

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo has announced that the New York Power Authority has finished $2.1 million in energy efficiency upgrades at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s Metro-North Railroad North White Plains Train Yard. This energy saving project, completed under the Governor's BuildSmart NY program, will save New York State more than $328,000 in energy costs and remove approximately 1,280 tons of greenhouse gases annually.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and MTA Metro-North Railroad today announced that Metro-North has received a federal grant of $20.8 million to harden Metro-North’s Hudson Line against future storm surge flooding events of the type experienced during Superstorm Sandy. The grant will be used to design and build 92 elevated steel equipment platforms along 30 miles of track from the South Bronx to Croton-Harmon, in Westchester County, as well as provide for the design and construction of perimeter protection, waterproofing, hardening of substations and train yard buildings, and installation of video and electronic monitoring of Metro-North facilities and infrastructure. The grant will be matched by $6.9 million in MTA funds.
