After nearly 80 years in the salty sea-air, the Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge is getting major upgrades and repairs to its lift span mechanical and electrical systems, structural steel and grid-deck repairs, bridge painting, and new fire line system and hydrants. These systems are critical to lift operation, and ensure functionality and good working order of the Marine Parkway Bridge, a critical evacuation route.

The MTA has releases its preliminary 2017 budget and four-year financial plan, continuing to raise targets for administrative and managerial cost savings across all agencies and making a number of investments to improve service quality and customer experience. The agency now expects to identify additional annual recurring savings of $50 million per year starting in 2017, pushing total annual recurring savings to nearly $2 billion by 2020.

LIRR customers no longer have to wait until summer to take a ride to Greenport. MTA Long Island Rail Road President Patrick A. Nowakowski announced that the LIRR plans to provide weekend service to Greenport on a year-round basis.

Massive reconstruction work needed to the Canarsie Tunnel, which carries the L train under the East River between Brooklyn and Manhattan, will require a full closure of the tunnel for 18 months starting no sooner than 2019. The MTA's decision to do the work under a full 18-month tunnel closure instead of a one-track, three-year closure, was made based on a detailed operational review, and only after significant community engagement in order to consider all adverse impacts. Serious consideration was also given to consequences of unplanned outages that would occur if one track was closed for three years.

More Metro-North customers will soon have access to mobile ticketing. The MTA has announced that MTA eTix, the ticketing app that allows Metro-North Railroad and Long Island Rail Road customers to buy train tickets anytime, anywhere on their smartphone, will be available for travel on Metro-North’s Harlem Line starting at 4:26 a.m. on Monday, July 25, when the Harlem Line’s first train of the week departs from its first station. The app continues to be available on Metro-North’s Hudson Line and the LIRR’s Port Washington Branch. The app is scheduled to become available for Metro-North’s New Haven Line, the New Haven Line’s three branches, and the rest of the LIRR, during the week of August 22.

Because of this afternoon's crane accident and closure of the Tappan Zee Bridge, Metro-North Railroad’s Haverstraw-Ossining Ferry and Newburgh-Beacon Ferry will honor TAPPAN ZEExpress (TZx) bus tickets for the remainder of the day. Customers who normally depart from Grand Central Terminal to connect to the TZx bus at Tarrytown can connect to the ferries by staying on a local train to Ossining, or catching an express train to Beacon. Hudson Line tickets to Tarrytown will be honored for travel at all stations on the Hudson Line, as far as Poughkeepsie. Also, NJTRANSIT and Metro-North are cross-honoring Hudson Line tickets on the Pascack Valley Line.

Governor Cuomo has unveiled the design features of 1,025 new and reimagined subway cars – including vital enhancements to the exteriors and interiors of regular cars, wider doors, as well as the addition of up to 750 “Open Car End” designed-cars, which will reduce wait times and increase capacity. The Governor also previewed key elements that will be featured in the renovation of 31 subway stations throughout the New York Metropolitan Area, and announced that the first of several Requests for Proposals will be issued this week. The MTA is using design-build contracts to expedite the process and ensure the shortest timeframe for project completion. These vital investments are part of the $27 billion, five-year MTA Capital Program to renew and expand the MTA network. Governor Cuomo unveiled the ambitious design-plan at the Transit Museum in Brooklyn on Monday, July 18.
