Throughout Thursday night and into Friday, an army of MTA New York City Transit workers swept throughout the City and waged a war of attrition against the first winter storm of 2014. As a result of their hard work, the system’s subways and buses continued to operate, though with service alternations necessitated by the harsh weather conditions.
As forces work to clear up to seven inches of snow from tracks, yards, depots and other facilities across the MTA regional transportation network, some regular weekday service will continue to operate at reduced levels.

The struggle to overcome the severe damage inflicted by the floodwaters of Superstorm Sandy is evident throughout the affected portions of the subway system and work is progressing steadily at the Greenpoint Tubes, where the 12 weekends of work scheduled for 2013 have been completed.

MTA Long Island Rail Road is helping riders get away early for the holiday. LIRR is adding 13 trains to its eastbound afternoon schedule from Penn Station on Christmas Eve, Wednesday, December 24, to accommodate the large number of customers leaving work early to begin their Christmas holiday.
