The 148th running of the Belmont Stakes is this coming Saturday, June 11, but the only sure thing about the big race is that the MTA Long Island Rail Road is the best way to get to Belmont Park. Coming off a stellar performance at last year’s Belmont Stakes when the LIRR moved more than 50,000 customers in and out of a newly modernized Belmont Park Station in record time, the nation’s busiest commuter rail line is once again primed and ready for the big event.

MTA Long Island Rail Road is offering a menu of refreshments, including choices from North Fork wineries, for Eastbound customers taking the 5:21 p.m. train from Ronkonkoma on Friday nights throughout the summer. Travelers can sit back and unwind with a variety of reasonably priced beverages from local wineries as well as Montauk Brewing Company. The rotating list of reds, whites and roses includes offerings from Bedell Cellars, Duck Walk, Jason’s Vineyard, Laurel Lake, Macari, Pelligrini, Pindar, and Raphael. Snacks are also available, including North Fork Potato Chips (in a variety of flavors) and cookies from Tates in Southampton.

An MTA Police Department training center has gone to the dogs. At a ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday, MTA and MTA Police officials opened an innovative Canine Training Facility in Stormville, New York,. The 72-acre campus houses nine indoor-scenario training areas and multiple outdoor training fields and obstacle courses and areas with cars, buses, platforms and even a decommissioned train, classrooms, twenty-four kennels, a veterinary room with medical kennels, and administrative offices. The outdoor and indoor training grounds provide the MTA Police with an unlimited number of scenarios to teach, drill and test the dogs.

A second track for Ronkonkoma Branch customers is one step closer to breaking ground. Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that two design-build contracts have been awarded for work that will significantly advance the Long Island Rail Road’s Double Track project. When completed, the project will dramatically increase capacity of the Ronkonkoma Branch along 18 miles between Farmingdale and Ronkonkoma. The addition of the second track will allow the LIRR to provide more frequent off-peak service to the Ronkonkoma Branch in both directions and will increase flexibility and reduce delays associated with service disruptions. Completion of the Double Track project is targeted for the end of 2018.

Ten new peregrine falcon chicks with a unique nursery that includes an awesome 360-degree view of the city skyline were recently banded at the Verrazano-Narrows, Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial and Throgs Neck Bridges. The 2016 newcomers include two boys and one girl 693-feet atop the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge’s Brooklyn tower; one boy and three girls 215-feet atop the Rockaway tower at Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge; and two boys and one girl 360-feet atop the Bronx tower at the Throgs Neck Bridge. Memorial Day is coming on Monday, May 30, which means the MTA will add extra LIRR, Metro-North trains on Friday, May 27, to help New Yorkers get an early start on the long three-day weekend. MTA Staten Island Railway will operate its Early Departure Get Away schedule on Friday, May 27. This schedule means extra SIR trains will be added earlier in the afternoon beginning at 2:30 p.m. from the St. George Ferry Terminal. There will be one express train and one local train awaiting every boat until 7:50 p.m.

MTA Long Island Rail Road will provide 10 additional early-afternoon trains from Penn Station on Friday, May 27, for customers planning an early start to the Memorial Day Weekend. The LIRR will operate on a regular weekend schedule on Saturday and Sunday and on a holiday schedule on Memorial Day.

Governor Andrew Cuomo has put the planned $121 million modernization of the Long Island Rail Road’s aging Hicksville station on the fast track, announcing the LIRR and the prime contractor have agreed to complete the job in 22 months, 13 months sooner than planned. “Hicksville station is the LIRR’s third busiest station – topped only by Penn and Jamaica - and it’s a key transfer point for customers on the Port Jefferson and Ronkonkoma branches,” Governor Cuomo said. “To have such an important transportation hub encumbered by construction for three years was out of the question. In order to speed up the process both the LIRR and the contractor have worked out a unique construction methodology shortening the total construction time from 35 to 22 months.”
