MTA New York City Transit’s Select Bus Service (SBS) is the 21st century response to the city’s growing need for speedy and efficient surface transportation. When SBS comes to Brooklyn on November 17, the new B44 SBS service will operate the length of the borough between the Williamsburg Bridge Transit Center and Sheepshead Bay.

During the construction of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in the early 1960s, a petite woman could be found weaving her way among the burly bridge builders with her drawing board and art supplies in hand. Artist and illustrator Lili Rethi became so familiar to workers building the bridge that they built her a little shed on site to shelter her from the wind and cold.

Beginning last Monday, for the fourth time this year, an army of workers were deployed along the more than seven-mile long line as train service was suspended on four consecutive nights at N line Q line R line icon stations in Manhattan. Repair crews took full advantage of the seven-hour work window between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Metro-North will resume full train service on the New Haven Line Monday morning, October 7, following successful tests of a major new electrical substation at Mount Vernon. A Con Edison feeder cable failure on September 25 knocked out train service in an eight-mile section of the New Haven Line, the busiest passenger rail line in the country. The outage occurred during the construction and commissioning of the new, long-planned, $50 million substation installation that will enable the railroad to increase service on the line.

A new, modified traffic pattern goes into effect on the Queens side of the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge as work continues on the $109 million Queens approach reconstruction and rehabilitation project. The area will be restriped and drivers will see the new pattern in place beginning Saturday, Oct. 5. Metro-North Railroad will offer a limited amount of additional rail service to accommodate half its normal New Haven Line weekday ridership in time for the Monday morning rush. While trains are expected to be crowded and customers are urged not to travel during the busiest part of rush hour, thousands of park-and-ride spaces in Westchester County and the Bronx will allow customers to ride other MTA services into Manhattan.
