The 3-year, $32 million project to replace the Henry Hudson Bridge’s original 1930’s-era steel curb stringers on the Bronx-bound upper level is moving to the next phase of work in the center lane where contractors will be rehabilitating bridge joints. The good news for drivers is that once this work is finished, the permanent lane closures that have been in place for several years will be lifted during morning and afternoon peak drive times. Off-peak lane closures will continue through the end of the project, which is on time and expected to be finished this fall.

Groundbreaking for the bridge took place on October 25, 1929, just four days before the stock market crash that ushered in the Depression. Originally designed to resemble the Manhattan Bridge, work on the municipal project came to an abrupt halt in 1932 with only some piers and parts of the anchorages in place.
