Metro-North continues to set safety standards for the railroad industry as it has received the highest safety award from the American Public Transportation Association (APTA). The commendation, known as the Gold Award for Safety, was given to Metro-North for developing a state-of-the art employee protection system that other railroads could consider replicating. The system, known as the Enhanced Employee Protection System (EEPS), was implemented in 2014. It adds a layer of protection for employees who work along and near railroad tracks, further enhancing the railroad’s efforts to safeguard against worker injuries and fatalities.

A soaring mosaic artwork that welcomes customers to MTA New York City Transit’s newest subway station and MTA Arts & Design’s first commission of a stop-motion short film are among 2015’s best public art as recognized by the Americans for the Arts, a nonprofit foundation devoted to advancing art and art education. Xenobia Bailey’s “Funktional Vibrations,” which is featured at the new 34 St-Hudson Yards station on the Flushing 7 Line, and Red Nose Studio’s animation, “The Blowing Bowler,” were named with 36 other art projects created in 2015 as outstanding by the foundation’s Public Art Network (PAN) Year in Review program. MTA Arts & Design has been recognized in the past four years by the Year in Review.

MTA New York City Transit today announced it will extend late night [R] service to lower Manhattan in order to improve subway connectivity for customers traveling between Manhattan and the southwestern end of Brooklyn. Late night [R] service currently operates as a shuttle between Bay Ridge-95 St and 36 St in Brooklyn. Customers coming from Bay Ridge and Sunset Park must transfer between the [R] shuttle and [D] [N] trains in order to travel to other parts of Brooklyn and Manhattan. The proposed service extension would shift the northern final stop of the late-night [R] shuttle from 36 St to Whitehall St-South Ferry.

It's Metro-North with the Bronze! The Railroad announced on Wednesday that it accepted an award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers for the 1906 electrification of Grand Central Terminal. The award, known as the IEEE Milestone in Electrical Engineering and Computing, is a bronze plaque to be mounted on a wall at Grand Central Terminal. An MTA Police Department training center has gone to the dogs. At a ribbon cutting ceremony on Wednesday, MTA and MTA Police officials opened an innovative Canine Training Facility in Stormville, New York,. The 72-acre campus houses nine indoor-scenario training areas and multiple outdoor training fields and obstacle courses and areas with cars, buses, platforms and even a decommissioned train, classrooms, twenty-four kennels, a veterinary room with medical kennels, and administrative offices. The outdoor and indoor training grounds provide the MTA Police with an unlimited number of scenarios to teach, drill and test the dogs.

A second track for Ronkonkoma Branch customers is one step closer to breaking ground. Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that two design-build contracts have been awarded for work that will significantly advance the Long Island Rail Road’s Double Track project. When completed, the project will dramatically increase capacity of the Ronkonkoma Branch along 18 miles between Farmingdale and Ronkonkoma. The addition of the second track will allow the LIRR to provide more frequent off-peak service to the Ronkonkoma Branch in both directions and will increase flexibility and reduce delays associated with service disruptions. Completion of the Double Track project is targeted for the end of 2018.

Ten new peregrine falcon chicks with a unique nursery that includes an awesome 360-degree view of the city skyline were recently banded at the Verrazano-Narrows, Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial and Throgs Neck Bridges. The 2016 newcomers include two boys and one girl 693-feet atop the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge’s Brooklyn tower; one boy and three girls 215-feet atop the Rockaway tower at Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge; and two boys and one girl 360-feet atop the Bronx tower at the Throgs Neck Bridge. Memorial Day is coming on Monday, May 30, which means the MTA will add extra LIRR, Metro-North trains on Friday, May 27, to help New Yorkers get an early start on the long three-day weekend. MTA Staten Island Railway will operate its Early Departure Get Away schedule on Friday, May 27. This schedule means extra SIR trains will be added earlier in the afternoon beginning at 2:30 p.m. from the St. George Ferry Terminal. There will be one express train and one local train awaiting every boat until 7:50 p.m.

MTA Long Island Rail Road will provide 10 additional early-afternoon trains from Penn Station on Friday, May 27, for customers planning an early start to the Memorial Day Weekend. The LIRR will operate on a regular weekend schedule on Saturday and Sunday and on a holiday schedule on Memorial Day.
