Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Chairman and CEO Thomas F. Prendergast has named Donald Spero President of MTA Bridges and Tunnels, where he had been serving as Acting President since August 2015. The appointment is effective immediately.

Robert F. Kennedy Bridge Queens Span Pedestrian Walkway to Close Nightly During May for Maintenance

Beginning Sunday, May 1, 2016, at 9:00 p.m., and nightly through the month of May until 5:00 a.m. each morning, the pedestrian walkway of the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge’s Queens span will be closed.

The nightly closures are necessary for painting and maintenance along the walkway, where rust and corrosion of the steel have accumulated. The work includes blasting under containment to clean the surface areas, followed by primer and painting.

Queens Midtown Tunnel Manhattan Plaza Work Requires Closure of “Uptown” Lanes for Two Months

Starting on Friday, April 29, 2016, and for approximately two months, the two “Uptown” exit lanes at the Manhattan plaza of the Queens Midtown Tunnel will be closed for the first of several stages of plaza roadway rehabilitation.

Customers seeking an Uptown Manhattan route should use the two open Crosstown lanes.  The two Downtown exit lanes will also remain open during this period.

Verrazano-Narrows Bridge Staten Island-bound Lower Level Closure for Annual Five Boro Bike Tour

The Staten Island-bound lower level of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge will be closed from 12:01 a.m. until 6 p.m. Sunday, May 1 for the annual TD Five Boro Bike Tour. The upper level of the bridge will remain open in both directions throughout the event.

Motorists should expect delays and allow extra travel time. To hear information about all the Verrazano-Narrow Bridge bike tour closures, call 718 556-8010.

Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge Closed To All Traffic Thursday morning, April 28th, 1 AM to 2 AM

The Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge will be fully closed to traffic during the early morning hours on Thursday, April 28 for maintenance work on the bridge lift span.

The closure will take place on Thursday, April 28th from 1:00 a.m. through 2:00 a.m. for necessary maintenance.  All traffic will be detoured to the Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge during this time.

‘Necklace’ of Environmentally Friendly Lights Coming Soon to Bronx-Whitestone Bridge

As we recognize Earth Day, MTA Bridges and Tunnels is wrapping up installation of new environmentally friendly LED lights at the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge, the last of the agency’s four suspended spans to upgrade its “necklace” light fixtures that are part of the bridges’ architectural features. Final programing for the controls of the recently installed LED lights is underway, but the view will be worth it when the lights go on permanently (see photo of recent test run).

Lift Tests at RFK Bridge Harlem River Lift Span Scheduled for Early Friday

Intermittent, full closures at the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge’s Harlem River Lift Span are scheduled on Friday, April 22, from 12:01 a.m. to 5 a.m. for maintenance work.

Each closure lasts approximately 20 minutes. Motorists may experience delays and should consider an alternate route.

Marine Parkway Bridge to Conduct Overnight Maintenance Test Lifts

 

MTA Bridges and Tunnels will be conducting multiple intermittent test lifts at the Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge from 12:01 a.m. to 5 a.m. on Thursday, April 14th, and again on Friday, April 15th, for necessary maintenance work.

 

Each lift will last approximately 15 minutes. Motorists will experience delays and may wish to use the Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge as an alternate route.

Queens-Bound Marine Parkway Bridge Closed Overnight April 4 –7, 2016

The Queens-Bound (southbound) side of the Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge will be closed to traffic during overnight hours on weeknights, from Monday through Friday, April 4 – 7, for replacement of machinery equipment in the bridge towers.

All southbound traffic will be detoured to the Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m., with the exception of the Q35 Bus.  Rockaway-bound traffic from Brooklyn will be detoured along the Belt Parkway and local routes to the Cross Bay Bridge.
