Governor Cuomo Annoucnes Friday Opening of HOV Lane for Gowanus Expressway and Carey Tunnel

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that, for the first time in more than 15 years, the Gowanus Expressway and Hugh L. Carey Tunnel HOV lanes will be open for the morning commute the day after Thanksgiving, Friday, November 27th. Higher traffic volume is expected due to a favorable weather forecast and an improving economy.

Reconstructed Rockaway Point Boulevard Overpass at Marine Parkway Bridge Opens to Traffic

MTA Bridges and Tunnels announced today the opening of the newly reconstructed Rockaway Point Boulevard Overpass at the Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge, completed on schedule in advance of Thanksgiving 2015.

Traffic was shifted from the temporary overpass, which had been in service since the spring, when contractors erected it in adjacent to the original overpass. The temporary structure allowed rebuilding to proceed without loss of traffic capacity and with minimal impact to the Breezy Point and Rockaway communities.

REVISED: Nighttime Closures Scheduled for Verrazano-Narrows Bridge’s Belt Parkway Ramps

The Brooklyn-bound upper level of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and the Belt Parkway entrance ramps from the bridge will be closed during overnight hours November 23 into November 24, 2015, Monday into Tuesday, for installation of new steel as part of the $84.3 million project to reconstruct the bridge’s Belt Parkway approach ramps and build a new bus/HOV ramp.

The work is dependent on good weather and may be canceled in the event of rain. NYPD Traffic Enforcement Agents and electronic signs will be used to help direct motorists to the detour route.

Overnight 15-Minute Intermittent Full Closures on Bronx-bound Upper Level of Henry Hudson Bridge and Parkway from Dyckman St

Between 11 p.m. on Thursday, November 19, and 5 a.m. on Friday, November 20, intermittent 15-minute full closures are planned for the Henry Hudson Bridge and Henry Hudson Parkway (north from Dyckman Street entrance) in the Bronx-bound direction.

The closures are necessary to raise and install full-width steel overhead gantries at the toll plaza as part of the move to Open Road Tolling (ORT).

If required, the operation will repeat again on Friday, November 20, into Saturday, November 21, until 5 a.m.

RFK Bridge Harlem River Lift Span Traffic Shifts to Temporary E 125 Street Exit Ramp

Beginning tonight, Friday, November 13, Manhattan-bound traffic exiting from Robert F. Kennedy Bridge to E.125 Street, will be shifted onto a temporary ramp to allow for demolition and reconstruction of the original ramp originally built in the mid-1930s.

Queens Midtown Tunnel Turns 75

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is celebrating 75 years of the Queens Midtown Tunnel this weekend, three years after the only under-river link for Manhattan and Queens drivers closed for the first time due to extensive flooding in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.

To mark the milestone, a selection of rarely seen vintage photos from the construction of the tunnel and other MTA Bridges and Tunnels structures has been posted on the MTA Flickr page. These photos are typically available only by appointment with the agency’s archivist.

Verrazano-Narrows Bridge Closed for TSC NYC Marathon Sun., Nov. 1

The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge will be closed to all vehicular traffic on Sunday, Nov. 1 between 7 a.m. and approximately 3 p.m. for the TSC New York City Marathon. Motorists traveling to Brooklyn or Staten Island via the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge must use alternate routes.

Hugh L. Carey Tunnel Tube Closure

The westbound tube at the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel will be closed from 9:30 p.m. Friday, October 23 through 9:30 p.m. Saturday, October 24 as part of the ongoing four-year, $282.5 million Sandy repair project.

One lane will operate in each direction in the remaining tube. Motorists may experience delays. This work is weather dependent and may be canceled if it rains.

The Sandy repair project includes replacing multiple systems that were damaged in 2012 from Superstorm Sandy including the entire traffic control and communications, lighting, drainage pump and fire line systems.
