MTA and Elected Officials Kick–Off Work to Remove Defunct Brooklyn–bound Toll Booths at Verrazano–Narrows

Metropolitan Transportation Authority Chairman and Chief CEO Jay Walder, along with federal, city and state officials, donned hardhats Sunday as several pieces of toll booth #1 at the Brooklyn–bound Verrazano–Narrows toll plaza were removed.

The event marked the beginning of a year–long, $2.5 million project to demolish the first 8 east–bound toll booths that have not been used since one–way tolling was first mandated by Congress in 1986.  The contractor on the project is Paul J. Scariano Inc., of Brooklyn.

New Traffic Pattern Goes Into Effect Sat., April 10th at Brooklyn–bound Verrazano–Narrows Bridge Toll Plaza To Get Ready For Toll Booth Removal Work

A new traffic pattern will be in effect for several months at the Brooklyn–bound Verrazano–Narrows toll plaza beginning Saturday, April 10th as preparation work begins for an upcoming construction project to remove the first two unused toll booths at the far right of the plaza.

Traffic coming on to the plaza from Father Capodanno, Lily Pond and Narrows Road South will be shifted around the construction zone.  Staten Island Expressway traffic will continue through the plaza as normal.

New Ramp Eases Travel From Bronx to Randall's Island Via RFK Bridge

Motorists who travel to Randall's Island for work or play will be able to use a newly constructed exit ramp, leading from the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge onto the island beginning Monday, April 5th.  The ramp is located approximately a half–mile past the Bronx toll plaza heading southbound to Queens.

RFK Bridge's Harlem River Lift Span Big Paint Job, Done Deal

After looking like a huge gift–wrapped present at various times during the past year–and–a–half, the Harlem River span of the 74–year–old Robert F. Kennedy Bridge is finally ready for its close–up, all shiny and freshly painted.  Various parts of the intricate steel vertical lift span bridge have been covered with containment material throughout the complex paint job.

Mother Nature Keeping MTA Bridges and Tunnels' Crews and RoadPatcher Truck Busy This Pothole Season

MTA Bridges and Tunnels' pothole repair crews are keeping busy; thanks to a rainy, snowy winter season that has included seven winter storms to date and the snowiest February on record in New York City. Maintenance crews, with help using the agency's RoadPatcher pothole repair truck, have filled more than 2,500 potholes since January, including 1,000 potholes in the first full week of March.

Dramatic Drop in Accidents on Throgs Neck Bridge CIP Northbound Ramp; Dedicated Single Lane Improves Traffic Flow

The one–lane Cross Island Parkway (CIP) on–ramp to the Throgs Neck Bridge is officially a safety success story: traffic accidents at the ramp are down 83% since January when the Bronx–bound ramp was re–striped and delineated to one–lane operation. 

Initially, the single–lane configuration was a temporary lane reduction to allow for deck reconstruction work and repairs from a July 2009 fire; but the arrangement ended up revealing by contrast just how accident–prone the original two–lane merge on the ramp had been.

Verrazano-Narrows Toll Plaza Improvement

MTA Bridges and Tunnels announced today that Paul J. Scariano, Inc. of Brooklyn was chosen as the contractor for the first phase of a major toll plaza improvement project at the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge that includes demolition of 8 unused Brooklyn-bound toll booths. The $2.5 million project also involves removing various components such as concrete islands, utilities, canopy structures, electronic signs as well as other electrical, concrete and asphalt restoration work.
