New Trailblazers Signs Installed Near MTA Bridges and Tunnels Facilities

Motorists who use MTA Bridges and Tunnels seven bridges and two tunnels should begin seeing brand new trailblazer signs along major roadways and entrances at each facility. 

"We are in the process of replacing 800 of these signature signs, some of which are decades–old, worn and extremely faded, with sharp, modern–looking signs," said Patrick Sbano, Manager of Bridges and Tunnels' Traffic, Safety and Engineering division, noting that most of the trailblazers are within three miles of the crossings.

Five Peregrine Falcon Chicks Hatch At Three MTA B & T Bridges

Three pairs of peregrine falcons are spreading their wings with joy after five new chicks hatched high atop the towers of the Verrazano–Narrows, Throgs Neck and Marine Parkway–Gil Hodges Memorial Bridges this season.  Three new chicks were born at the Verrazano, one at the Throgs Neck and one at Marine Parkway–Gil Hodges Memorial.

Although no longer on the federal list of endangered species, peregrine falcons are still on the state endangered species list.

Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge Ramps Re-open on May 22nd

Newly constructed ramps to and from the Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge in Rockaway will reopen to motorists on May 22nd, just in time for Memorial Day weekend and the kick–off of beach season. 

"We promised to try and complete the ramp reconstruction work before this important weekend," said Adrian Moshe, Facility Engineer for both the Cross Bay and Marine Parkway–Gil Hodges Memorial bridges.  "We are pleased to turn over these like–new ramps to our customers."

Pothole Fix Is Fast Maneuver at MTA Bridges and Tunnels

It's pothole season again and MTA Bridges and Tunnels' maintenance crews are on alert and ready to pave them away as quickly and efficiently as possible at the agency's nine crossings. 

So far this year maintenance crews have made more than 2000 pothole repairs using 6,000 gallons of liquid asphalt emulsion, 163 tons of stone aggregate, 26 tons of hot asphalt and 13 tons of cold patch mix.

Bronx-Whitestone Bridge Marks 70 Years As Critical NYC Crossing

"The finest suspension bridge of them all," proclaimed Robert Moses during  opening day ceremonies for the Bronx–Whitestone Bridge on April 29, 1939.  Seven decades later the bridge still cuts a graceful figure across the East River as it links the Bronx to Queens and Long Island beyond.

Verrazano-Narrows Employees Corral Injured Goose

Two MTA Bridges and Tunnels employees were led on a brief, but wild goose chase Thursday morning after getting reports from motorists about an injured Canadian goose in the roadway at the Verrazano–Narrows Bridge.

Officer Gus Sasso and Level I Maintainer Jim Ferguson heard a call come over the radio around 11 a.m. Thursday about an injured duck or goose on the lower level of the Staten Island–bound roadway. Ferguson, who was in a wrecker truck on the Staten Island side of the bridge, and Sasso, on patrol nearby, immediately responded.

MTA Bridges and Tunnels Statement on Bronx-Whitestone Closure

Shortly after 1 p.m., a boom truck driven by a MTA Bridges and Tunnels contractor struck an overhead gantry sign on the Queensbound (southbound) plaza of the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge near the Queens anchorage.

The impact took down a nearly 45 foot wide and 15 foot high sign and the gantry, the metal system that supports signs, blocking six lanes (three southbound and three northbound lanes), and closing the bridge in both directions.

Circus Elephants' Annual Walk Through Queens Midtown Tunnel QMT Closed to Traffic: 11:30 PM (3/23) to 2 AM (3/24)

Once again New York City hosts the circus, and the popular parade of elephants will be making a grand entrance via the Queens Midtown Tunnel just before midnight on Monday, March 23rd.  Motorists should use alternate routes during this period (from 11:30 PM); the tunnel is expected to re–open at approximately 2 AM, Tuesday, March 24th.

Truckers can now go to a special online page at MTA Bridges and Tunnels' Internet home to access all the information they need about using the agency’s nine crossings in New York City, including weight and size restrictions, hazardous materials rules, facility contacts for special permits, and toll rates.

The Trucker Information page can be found by going to mta.info under MTA Bridges and Tunnels. The page is designed to better serve trucking and commercial vehicle operator customers.
