MTA Announces Plans to Tear Down Vacant Toll Booths and Other Improvements at the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge

MTA Bridges and Tunnels today announced a series of planned improvements for the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge toll plaza, including a design for removal of the long-unused eastbound toll booths and re-alignment of the eastbound roadway. Demolition is expected in 2011. The eastbound booths have not been used since 1986 when one-way toll collection began.

Registration Open Till January 22nd for MTA Bridges and Tunnels Maintainers Civil Service Exam

MTA Bridges and Tunnels is looking to hire women and men age 21 and older with trade skills to work as Maintainers at the agency's facilities, which connect the five boroughs of New York City. Registration is open now through January 22, 2008 to sign up for the exam, which will be given on Saturday, April 26, 2008.

Henry Hudson Bridge Parkway Lane Closure Continues through Mid-January 2008

Motorists are advised that closure of the western-most parkway lane leading to the upper level northbound toll plaza of the Henry Hudson Bridge will continue through mid-January 2008. The lane has been closed since October 9 in order to repair the stone parapet wall.

In addition to the wall repair, which involves rebuilding, re-setting, cleaning and pointing the stone along the entire 400 feet of the wall, there will be installation of a bridge rail in front of the wall, and relocation of a light pole and foundation.

MTA Bridges and Tunnels - Ready for Another Winter

Long before the first snowflake of winter, MTA Bridges and Tunnels employees are hard at work preparing for the onset of winter and all its potentially hazardous road conditions.

The agency has more than 6,000 tons of roadway deicer, a fleet of 80 snow vehicles and hundreds of snow-trained employees ready for whatever the winter of 2007 may have in store for New York City.

MTA Executive Director Elliot Sander, Bridges & Tunnels Acting President David Moretti Honor Heroic Verrazano-Narrows Bridge Officers

MTA Bridges and Tunnels gave its highest award, the Medal of Honor, to two Bridges and Tunnels Officers at a ceremony last week. The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge officers, Richard Cupo of Eltingville, Staten Island and Heriberto Merrin of South Ozone Park, Queens, were honored for rescuing an assault victim held against her will in a vehicle crossing through the toll lane on September 4, 2006. Responding to the woman's call for help, the officers were able to remove her from the car to safety and arrest the three perpetrators.

Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge Enters New Stage of Deck Rehabilitation

The $56.9 million deck rehabilitation on the Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge is moving to a new stage on October 9th with the closure of a northbound lane. Please note that two lanes will remain open during morning rush hours, although additional lane closures may occur intermittently during off-peak hours. The walkway will remain open to the public throughout this work period. One southbound lane is already closed for construction.
