Queens Midtown Tunnel Only One Lane Open in Each Direction for Roadway Work Weekend of Oct. 4–5

Necessary roadway work in the Queens Midtown Tunnel will require that only one lane instead of two will be open in each direction from 12:01 AM on Saturday, October 4th through Sunday, October 5th until 2 PM. One tunnel tube will be closed and all traffic will use the remaining tube (with two–way traffic) during this 36–hour period.

"There will be signs alerting motorists, and we will closely monitor the scene during the weekend to ensure minimal inconvenience to our customers," said Theresa Smith, Acting General Manager of the tunnel.

Zero Tolerance for Overweight Trucks at MTA Bridges and Tunnels' Crossings

MTA Bridges and Tunnels' truck weight enforcement effort has been averaging more than 150 summonses per month given to trucks not in compliance with the New York State Department of Transportation (DOT) Bridge Formula and carrying overweight loads. The fines are up to $10,000 if they attempt to cross the agency's facilities.

"Our priority is the safety of our customers and preventing damage to the facilities," said Acting President David Moretti. "Overweight vehicles put extra stress on decks and surface pavements."

Triborough Bridge's Harlem River Lift Span Under Wraps for Major Paint Job

Motorists taking the Triborough Bridge's Manhattan span across the Harlem River or to the FDR Drive are currently greeted with a strange sight as the west tower comes into view: the 210-foot high steel edifice is shrouded in billowy containment material while a very big paint job is underway.

MTA Bridges and Tunnels Cross Bay Veterans Memorial Bridge Ramp Closure and Detour Info

As part of a new stage in the major deck and ramp reconstruction of the Cross Bay Bridge, the north-bound ramp from Beach Channel Drive east to the bridge will be closed to traffic beginning September 15th, 2008, and remain so through December. The ramp will be fully closed for demolition work and structural concrete repairs, followed by new paving.

MTA Bridges and Tunnels Ready for Last Blast of Summer Travel and Labor Day Weekend Traffic

As the summer travel season draws to its annual big finish with the Labor Day three–day weekend, MTA Bridges and Tunnels' nine crossings are prepped and ready to smooth the way for customers who will be hitting the road for a final seasonal road trip.

MTA Bridges and Tunnels will suspend most routine maintenance work at its major crossings (with the exception of mandatory ongoing construction at the Triborough Bridge) beginning at 12 noon on Friday, Aug. 29th until Tuesday morning, Sept. 2nd.

MTA Bridges and Tunnels Special Archive: Treasure Trove of History

The Special Archive of the agency now known as MTA Bridges and Tunnels chronicles a rich history that parallels the growth of modern New York City itself. The collection, dating to the early 1930s when the agency's roots were forming as the Triborough Bridge Authority, contains 100,000 photos, 40,000 drawings, 50 scale models, and 40,000 feet of film footage. The artifacts make up one of the most extensive visual records of Depression-era public works in the country.

MTA's Bridges and Tunnels New High-tech Signs Deliver the Message Bright and Clear to Customers

MTA Bridges and Tunnels is in the process of replacing and upgrading the banner-like electronic signs that advise and direct motorists who use the agency's nine bridges and tunnels.  The new signs, some of which replace older models, have expanded message features and improved brightness and readability expected to benefit the flow of traffic for customers. The agency has invested approximately $4 million in Capital Program funding for this customer service improvement.

Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge Vertical Lift Span Active Year Round

The Marine Parkway Bridge has a 50% summer increase in vehicular traffic thanks to beach-bound motorists, but the raising of its lift span for marine traffic to pass through is steady business all year. The 71-year-old bridge, which connects Brooklyn to the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens and spans the entrance to Jamaica Bay, generally raises its center section more than 100 times per year; in 2007, there were 136 lifts for crossing vessels.
