Newborn Peregrine falcon chicks spent their first hours enjoying last week's fine early summer weather in a cozy nest atop the south tower on the Queens side of the Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge.

MTA Board Confirms $600K Contract Incentive for Pre-Independence Day Finish of Verrazano-Narrows Bridge Westbound Roadway Work

The MTA Board today ratified a $600,000 contractor incentive that will complete approach deck replacement on the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge lower level westbound before 4th of July instead of by Labor Day.  All lanes toward Staten Island on the bridge’s lower level will be in normal service before the holiday.  The $64.7 million project involves the east- and west-bound lower level roadways.  Eastbound (to Brooklyn) work started later and will finish by Labor Day.

MTA Bridge and Tunnel Officers Honored at Law Enforcement Award Ceremony

Two MTA Bridge and Tunnel Officers (BTOs), who last year assisted an off-duty NYPD officer grappling with a slasher near the Queens Midtown Tunnel (QMT), received the top award among more than 40 presented at the Annual Law Enforcement Award Ceremony co-sponsored by the Authority and the Officers’ unions at agency headquarters on Randall’s Island next to the Triborough Bridge last week.

Summer Prep Time at the Rockaway Bridges

Memorial Day is on the horizon and New Yorkers will be heading to the beach, so MTA Bridges and Tunnels’ two Rockaways crossings—the Cross Bay Veterans Memorial and the Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridges—are gearing up for the seasonal doubling of daily traffic in a variety of ways.

Air System Overhaul

MTA Bridges and Tunnels will complete the renovation of the original late 1930s ventilation system at the Queens Midtown Tunnel this month.  The $18.8 million upgrade involved replacing 23 carbon steel exhaust fans with new more resilient stainless steel fans, and meeting all modern tunnel standards.  The final assembled fans measure 20 feet high and 11 feet long and wide.

Energy-efficient LED Lighting to Shine at Verrazano-Narrows Bridge

At the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge today, a maintenance worker suspended in a bucket truck replaced the first of 262 fifty-pound conventional light fixtures and necklace lights with a new lighter fixture and an energy-saving light-emitting diode (LED) bulb.

The Verrazano-Narrows is slated to be the first among the agency's seven bridges to have hundreds of LED necklace lights installed in the next year as part of the authority's environmental program.

Linking New York City

MTA Bridges and Tunnels, created in the midst of the Great Depression and now the world’s largest vehicular toll collection agency, turns 75 this year.  In 1968, the agency, then known as the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority (TBTA), was folded into the newly created Metropolitan Transportation Authority and began providing financial support for MTA regional transit services.

$2.5 Billion Five-year Capital Program

MTA Bridges and Tunnels officials briefed the Bridges and Tunnels Committee of the MTA Board last week on their self-funded $2.5 billion five-year capital program.  The program is financed by bonds backed by the agency’s toll revenue.  The agency handles 830,000 vehicles a day and provides about 60% of its toll revenue to support the transit services of the MTA.
