LIRR to Perform Sandy Restoration and Resiliency Work on Long Beach Branch Sept. 21-22

MTA Long Island Rail Road crews will be out in force on the Long Beach Branch the weekend of Sept. 21-22 to restore signal system components that were damaged by Superstorm Sandy and increase their resiliency, and to perform maintenance on the Reynolds Channel Bridge, which connects Island Park and Long Beach.

As a result of the work, buses will substitute for trains between Valley Stream and Long Beach starting at approximately 10 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, and continuing until approximately 1 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 23.

LIRR to Introduce New Fleet of Rail Cars Tomorrow

Long Island Rail Road President Phil Eng today announced that the LIRR’s next fleet of rail cars, known as the “M9” cars, will enter into passenger service tomorrow, Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2019.
The new cars incorporate and improve upon the most successful and popular features of the MTA’s two recent electric car fleets, the LIRR’s familiar M7s electric cars, and the M8 cars serving Metro-North’s New Haven Line, and will enhance safety.

Governor Cuomo Announces First of Eight LIRR Grade Crossings Eliminated

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that Urban Avenue in New Cassel reopened to traffic on time this morning. The roadway is the first of eight Long Island Rail Road grade crossings to be completely eliminated through the LIRR Expansion Project. Most of the crossings are being transformed into underpasses, which enhance railroad safety, improve traffic flow in communities of Nassau County, and reduce localized nuisances from horns and bells.

MTA and Labor Officials Commend Employees Who Found $9,000 In Cash Left on LIRR Train

Long Island Rail Road President Phillip Eng, SMART Union General Chairman Anthony Simon and Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen General Chairman Kevin Sexton joined together at Atlantic Terminal, Brooklyn, to commend LIRR train crew members who returned $9,000 to a very grateful customer last Thursday, Aug. 29.

LIRR to Restore 14 Rush Hour Trains to/from Penn Station Following Completion of Latest Round of Amtrak Track Work at Penn Station

Long Island Rail Road President Phil Eng today announced that following the expected completion of Amtrak’s latest round of work to repair and rebuild infrastructure at Penn Station this weekend, 14 LIRR rush hour trains that had been canceled or rerouted will return to Penn Station effective Tuesday, Sept. 3.

The LIRR has been operating 260 rush hour trains daily, limited by a reduction of track availability due to Amtrak’s work. As of this Tuesday, Sept. 3, the LIRR will restore 14 trains, for a rush hour total of 274 trains, a 5.4% increase.

Hempstead Branch Service Will Only be Available at Hollis, Queens Village & Floral Park on the Weekend of August 17-18

The LIRR Expansion Project will perform its third bridge installation project of the summer on the weekend of August 17-18, 2019, as crews install a new bridge over South Tyson Avenue in the Village of Floral Park. The bridge, in service since 1958, is being modified. The new bridge will address a bottleneck at this section of the LIRR’s Main Line – where four tracks merge into two – and accommodate a future third track to increase capacity and improve service reliability.

Nursing on-the-go moms who travel through Penn Station -- one of the busiest transportation hubs in the U.S. -- now have their own private space, known as a lactation pod, to breastfeed or pump, located in the LIRR’s Customer Waiting Room on the main LIRR concourse near the 7th Avenue entrance.

LIRR to Continue Switch Replacement East of Syosset August 10-11 and 17-18

MTA Long Island Rail Road today announced that crews will complete the replacement of the switches east of Syosset over the weekends of August 10-11 and 17-18. These devices allow the railroad to safely switch trains from one track to another between Huntington and Hicksville. The new switches will improve safety and service reliability and keep the LIRR system in a state of good repair.
