LIRR to Perform Overnight Track Work on Port Washington Branch

MTA Long Island Rail Road forces will be working Tuesday night, Dec. 3, through early Wednesday morning, Dec. 4, to make rail repairs to ensure the continued safety and reliability of the LIRR system. As a result, buses will substitute for trains between Great Neck and Port Washington between 9:50 p.m. and 3:30 a.m.

LIRR Notches Dramatic Railroad Crossing Safety Improvements; Federal Regulators Recommend All U.S. Railroads Review LIRR Program and Consider Similar Steps

The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has recognized MTA Long Island Rail Road for a nation-leading program that has dramatically improved railroad safety through the use of flexible delineators at railroad crossings and enhanced GPS alerts. The delineators and a partnership with Google/Waze have in their first year virtually eliminated the problem of motorists inadvertently turning onto tracks, which until last year had been happening with increased frequency – 21 times a year.

LIRR Issues Further Updates on Last Night’s Slow Speed Derailment

As of 11:31 a.m. the second and final car that had left the tracks has been re-railed. Repairs to the broken rail are underway.

MTA Long Island Rail Road crews have worked around the clock to make repairs and ensure the safety of the railroad and its passengers following a slow speed derailment Friday night, in which some wheels on the last two cars left the tracks. The rear car of the 10-car train was re-railed as of 8:20 a.m.

LIRR Issues Update on Last Night’s Slow Speed Derailment

MTA Long Island Rail Road crews have worked around the clock to make repairs and ensure the safety of the railroad and its passengers following a slow speed derailment Friday night, in which some wheels on the last two cars left the tracks. The rear car of the 10-car train was re-railed as of 8:20 a.m. leaving a single two-axle truck at the rear of the ninth car to be re-railed, which was expected to be accomplished by early Saturday afternoon.

LIRR’s November 11 Timetable Change Addresses Fall Leaf Season, Trackwork, and Positive Train Control Installation

MTA Long Island Rail Road crews continue to make improvements across the system resulting in some peak and off-peak schedule adjustments for customers. LIRR is advising customers that new timetables go into effect Nov. 11 andcontinue through Jan. 5, 2020.

Along with improvements related to track resurfacing and station renovation, cable installation will begin in Brooklyn for the implementation of Positive Train Control (PTC), a technology to improve rail safety.

LIRR Commissions Positive Train Control on Four Branches

MTA Long Island Rail Road President Phillip Eng today announced that select trains operating on the Far Rockaway, Long Beach, Oyster Bay, and West Hempstead Branches have begun operating with Positive Train Control, a signal system enhancement that reduces the potential for human error to cause specific types of train collisions and derailments.
