LIRR Commissions Positive Train Control on Four Branches

MTA Long Island Rail Road President Phillip Eng today announced that select trains operating on the Far Rockaway, Long Beach, Oyster Bay, and West Hempstead Branches have begun operating with Positive Train Control, a signal system enhancement that reduces the potential for human error to cause specific types of train collisions and derailments.

Governor Cuomo Announces Second of Eight LIRR Grade Crossings Eliminated

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that Covert Avenue in New Hyde Park reopened to traffic on schedule. The roadway is the second of eight Long Island Rail Road grade crossings to be completely eliminated through the LIRR Expansion Project. Most of the crossings, including the one at Covert Avenue, are being transformed into underpasses, which enhance railroad safety, improve traffic flow in communities of Nassau County, and reduce localized nuisances from horns and bells.

Traffic Advisory: Covert Avenue Reopens in New Hyde Park

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced that Covert Avenue, between 1st Avenue and 5th Avenue in New Hyde Park, reopened to traffic today, Saturday, Oct. 12, shortly before 4 p.m. The roadway had been closed on April 15 for LIRR-related reconstruction and improvement.

LIRR to Install Two New Bridges in East Hampton
MTA Long Island Rail Road today announced crews will begin the final stage of work to replace two bridges in East Hampton, at North Main Street and Accabonac Road to improve safety and reduce the possibility of bridge strikes with oversized vehicles improperly crossing these roadways.

MTA to Conduct East Side Access Signal Tests for Four Weekends

Over the next four weekends, Oct. 12-13, 19-20, 26-27, and Nov. 2-3, crews will perform tests of signals in Harold Interlocking, the complex of switches in Sunnyside, Queens, where LIRR trains bound for Grand Central will separate from its trains to Penn Station, and where eastbound trains from those two terminals will merge onto the Main Line for travel to Long Island.

As a result of these signal tests, trains will operate hourly on the Port Washington Branch instead of every 30 minutes during these four weekends.

LIRR to Conduct Cyclical Rail Safety Tests Oct. 12-13 and Accommodate City of New York’s Pedestrian Bridge Demolition in Bayside

The Long Island Rail Road will perform cyclical rail safety tests on the Port Washington Branch during overnight hours on Oct. 12-13 while the City of New York concurrently demolishes a decommissioned pedestrian bridge over the LIRR’s tracks in Bayside. MTA Completes Replacement of 108-Year-Old LIRR Bridge in Garden City in 55 Hours

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced that early this morning, workers successfully completed the replacement of a 108-year-old bridge that carried the Long Island Rail Road over Nassau Boulevard in Garden City with a higher bridge that will reduce truck accidents, improve on-time performance, and carry a third bay for an expanding railroad. The bridge replacement, was completed over a 55-hour window from Friday evening through 5:54 a.m. today.
