LIRR Is Best Route to the Belmont Stakes and "Big Brown's" Run For the Triple Crown; Extra Train Service on Stakes Day, June 7
The potential for a Triple Crown winner in "Big Brown" is expected to be a big draw for racing fans to the Belmont Stakes on June 7 and the MTA Long Island Rail Road is ready. There will be additional trains to and from Belmont for this historic running of the Belmont Stakes. The LIRR will operate 18 trains, most direct from Penn Station, between 9:59 AM and 4:16 PM to Belmont Park. There will also be frequent westbound service back to Jamaica and Penn Station starting at 3:59 PM, continuing until 9 pm (see details below).

MTA LIRR's Employee Safety Record And Customer Safety Campaign Receive Awards
Safety is the number one priority at the LIRR. Recent awards help to drive home that point. For employee safety achievements, the E.H. Harriman Memorial Awards Institute, a national rail industry safety advocacy group, has recognized the LIRR with its Certificate of Commendation, one of the most prestigious awards in the industry, for most improved employee accident rate in its railroad class.

The MTA Long Island Rail Road will mark the traditional start of summer this Memorial Day Weekend with extra service for its customers. The extra service includes eight additional eastbound trains Friday afternoon, May 23, for customers planning an early start on the holiday weekend. The Memorial Day Weekend also heralds the start of summer packages to Jones Beach, Long Beach and Fire Island, and a special Memorial Day weekend package fare to Calverton Cemetery, on Saturday, May 24, for those wishing to visit the grave of a loved one.

MTA Long Island Rail Road President Helena Williams today announced plans to reduce the use of train horns and their decibel level at numerous locations where residents have complained about noise in the past.
"I have heard the complaints of our neighbors along the LIRR's right of way loud and clear," said Williams. "Now we are doing something about it."
After careful study, Williams said the LIRR has concluded it could, in certain circumstances, achieve these aims without compromising the safety of passengers, employees or the general public.
MTA LIRR To Increase Safety Presence at Two Nassau County Grade Crossings
Following recent incidents at the Atlantic Avenue grade crossing in East Rockaway and the Stewart Avenue grade crossing in Bethpage, the MTA Long Island Rail Road will be increasing its police and safety presence at these crossings in a concerted effort to bolster safety awareness. On May 2, a train struck a truck at Atlantic Avenue that had improperly entered the crossing. On May 5, a bicyclist went around the gates at the Stewart Avenue crossing and was hit by a train.
98.35% Is Best On-Time Morning Peak Performance In Almost 30 Years
The MTA Long Island Rail Road continues its exemplary on-time performance record with the best ever AM peak month since modern on-time record keeping began in 1979. The 98.35% morning peak on-time average for April was almost one percent higher than the previous record high (97.41% set in May and July of 2005). The overall April monthly on-time of 95.97% was the second best since 1979.
MTA LIRR Substitutes Bus Service for Overnight Trains on Port Washington Branch for Rail Testing Program, Saturday, May 10
The MTA Long Island Rail Road will provide bus service in place of four overnight trains on the Port Washington Branch between Great Neck and Port Washington on Saturday, May 10 in order to use the Sperry Rail Car to conduct special rail tests. Two eastbound and two westbound trains will be affected. Customers should allow up to 30 minutes additional travel time.
