LIRR President Asks Customers To Tune In To Safety

Today, the MTA Long Island Rail Road announced a new customer awareness safety campaign called "Be TrainSmart." Recognizing that customers live in a 24/7 world with cell phones, text messages, iPods, Blackberries, newspapers and cups of coffee, the LIRR is asking customers to "Tune In To Safety."

Buses Replace Eastbound LIRR Trains to Hollis & Queens Village Weekend Of July 28-29 Due to Switch Replacement & Track Work at Queens Village

Switch replacement and track work in the Queens Village area will affect eastbound train service for Hollis and Queens Village customers during the weekend of July 28-29. Substitute bus service will be provided for eastbound Hollis and Queens Village customers between 2 PM Saturday and 2 AM Sunday as detailed below.

MTA LIRR Customer Service Enhancements Slated For 2008

MTA Long Island Rail Road is planning a number of new initiatives and enhancements funded through the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's 2008 budget that are aimed at improving customer service in a very tangible way.

Realizing the full benefit of its 836 new M7 electric train car fleet purchased through the MTA/LIRR Capital Program, the LIRR is in the unique position to add service to various branches, as well as improve customer seating opportunities.

In an initiative started in mid-2007 and continuing into 2008 the LIRR has added the following service enhancements:

New MTA LIRR Getaway Goes to Long Island's "Riviera" July 28

A new MTA Long Island Rail Road getaway travels to the area formerly known as Long Island's Riviera. The "Southampton Escape" Getaway on Saturday, July 28, begins with a bus ride that winds through the Southampton Estates section on the way to the first stop at St. Andrew's Dune Church, the only Long Island church situated on the bluffs overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The church's unusual architecture is complemented by its Tiffany-designed windows.

MTA LIRR Begins Major Effort to Combat "Slip-Slide"; Improving Service Reliability a Key Goal

Today, the MTA Long Island Rail Road announced a comprehensive safety and service reliability plan to combat train wheel "slip-slide" conditions and flat wheels. These conditions are a result of low adhesion between the train wheel and the rail during braking caused by a slippery substance - called pectin - created by wheels crushing fallen or scattered leaves. "Slip-slide" is very similar to a car's wheels skidding on an icy road.
