Weekend Travel Alert: Hempstead Branch

Buses replace westbound trains at Queens Village and Hollis beginning at 10:30 PM on Friday, May 29 through 3:30 AM on Monday, June 1 as the LIRR suspends service to allow workers to waterproof the 211th St. Bridge near Jamaica Ave. in Queens. Service will be restored in time for Monday’s rush hour. A second weekend outage will be necessary to complete the project. That work is currently scheduled to begin late Friday, June 26 and finish up early Monday, June 29.

Weekend Travel Alert: Port Jefferson Branch

Buses will replace trains between Port Jefferson and Huntington over the weekend of Saturday, May 30 and Sunday, May 31 as the Long Island Rail Road resumes the installation of new concrete ties along that stretch of track. As a result, service along the route will be reduced from hourly to every two hours.

The installation work, which got underway in March, will continue on non-holiday weekends through the summer and will also impact travel between Huntington and Hicksville where service will be reduced from half-hourly to hourly.

Long Island Rail Road Adding Extra Trains for Memorial Day Weekend

MTA Long Island Rail Road will provide ten additional early-afternoon train trains from Penn Station on Friday, May 22, for customers planning an early start to the Memorial Day Weekend. The LIRR will operate on a regular weekend schedule on Saturday and Sunday and on a holiday schedule on Memorial Day.

The following trains have been added to regular Friday afternoon schedule:

Ronkonkoma Branch

• 1:40 p.m. stopping at Woodside, Jamaica, Mineola, Hicksville, and then all stops to Ronkonkoma

40,000 LIRR Customers Face Delays over Weekend of May 16-17 as Railroad Demolishes Ellison Avenue Bridge

An estimated 40,000 Long Island Rail Road customers face significant delays over the weekend of Saturday, May 16 and Sunday, May 17 when the Railroad suspends train service between Hicksville and Mineola during demolition of the Ellison Ave. Bridge in Westbury. Hockey fans planning to take the train to Madison Square Garden for the New York Rangers’ Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals against Tampa Bay at 1 p.m. on Saturday will need to plan their travels with this service disruption in mind.

New LIRR Train Schedules Start on Monday, May 18

The MTA Long Island Rail Road is introducing new system-wide timetables on Monday, May 18. The new train schedules, which will remain in effect until September 7, offer four significant service improvements and coincide with the annual introduction of seasonal summer services and the start of track work season throughout the railroad.

Buses Replace Mid-Day Montauk Branch Trains

For four days next week, the Long Island Rail Road will perform mid-day track inspections on the Montauk Branch. Crews will use an advanced Sperry rail car to search for metal fatigue and faults beneath the surface of the steel rails, and make repairs as needed.

As crews perform the work, buses will replace between two and three trains per day in each direction. Customers should plan to build in additional travel time as described below and in a special timetable.
