Otisville Tunnel & Tie Replacement

Track improvement work on the Port Jervis line this weekend will mean bus substitution for MTA Metro-North Railroad customers at three stations, Middletown, Otisville and Port Jervis.

To allow Metro-North track workers to replace the rail and ties in the mile-long, single- track Otisville Tunnel, the track will be taken out of service beginning at 12:15 a.m. Saturday, June 21, 2008 after the 12:08 a.m. arrival at Otisville. That train, the 9:55 p.m. Friday departure from Hoboken, will continue to the end of the line at Port Jervis, arriving at 12:27 a.m.

The Town/Village of Harrison and MTA Metro-North Railroad will host a public Open House to discuss a proposed downtown revitalization and transit-oriented development project at the Harrison Station. Metro-North Adds Seats to Six Port Jervis Line Peak Trains

MTA Metro-North Railroad is adding cars to six Port Jervis Line trains, three in the AM peak and three in the PM peak, beginning Monday June 2 to provide additional seating capacity.

Coincidentally these service improvements mimic contingency plans implemented last week because of a strike by Short Line bus drivers, when eight to 10 trains each day had extra cars to handle people who usually take a bus to work.

Harmon Shop Gets MTA Chairman's Safety Award

The 450 men and women who work in the Maintenance of Equipment Department at the Harmon Shop & Yard and in Poughkeepsie have been awarded the 2007 MTA Chairman's Group Achievement in Safety Award.

From 2000 to 2007, these employees have reduced injuries of all kinds by a whopping 78%. When you look only at injuries that resulted in "lost time," meaning the employee had to be off work to recuperate, the reduction was even greater – 92% during the same eight-year period. Last year there were only 3 lost-time injuries, compared to 38 in 2000.

Route 7 Roadwork Means Buses on the Danbury Branch This Weekend

Installation of culverts under the railroad tracks in Wilton as part of the Route 7 Project necessitates the use of buses for Danbury Branch train service this weekend, MTA Metro-North Railroad announced.

From Saturday, June 7 through Sunday, June 8, buses will follow the train schedule. About 260 people use the Danbury Branch each weekend day on six trains in each direction.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation will do an open cut excavation at Wilton as part of its project to widen Route 7.

Metro-North Employees Save Life of Man Struck by a Train

Six Metro-North employees whose quick thinking and selflessness saved the life of a man who was struck by a train were honored Wednesday by the Executive Director and board of directors of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

On May 16, at 4:04 p.m., the engineer of a Hudson Line train saw a trespasser lying on the ground with his feet on the rail. Although the engineer immediately applied the emergency brakes and sounded the horn, the train couldn't stop in time and hit the trespasser.

Grand Central Terminal's Station Master's Offices Goes Wireless

The Station Master's Office in Grand Central Terminal, long an oasis with spacious benches, restrooms and an eye-pleasing floral mural, is now a "hot spot" for free wireless internet access.

MTA Metro-North Railroad customers can now turn on their laptops and surf the net or check e-mail while waiting for a train.

"Metro-North is pleased to offer this amenity to our customers," said Metro-North President Peter A. Cannito. "In fact, we're confident that the Station Master's Office will become even more popular now that WiFi service has been established."

MTA Metro-North Railroad and New York State Department of Transportation Make Plans to Minimize Impacts in the Event of a Strike by Short Line Bus Company

In the face of a potential strike by employees of Coach USA/Short Line bus company at midnight tonight, MTA Metro-North Railroad is making plans to increase service on the Port Jervis Line, the Newburgh to Beacon bus and the Newburgh to Beacon ferry.

Early Getaway Trains Aplenty for Memorial Day Weekend

To help get the Memorial Day Weekend off to an early start, Metro-North offers lots of extra outbound "getaway service" on Friday, May 23. All departures are from Grand Central.

Hudson Line: There are four extra trains departing from Grand Central Terminal, two Croton-Harmon expresses at 1:45 p.m. and 3:25 p.m. and two Poughkeepsie expresses at 2:36 p.m. and 4:05 p.m.
