Celebrate the NY Transit Museum's 40th Anniversary

On July 4th, 1976, a group of New York City Transit employees opened the “New York Transit Exhibit” as part of the United States Bicentennial year celebrations. Housed in the decommissioned Court Street Station, the exhibit allowed visitors to climb aboard fifteen vintage subway and elevated cars and explore a variety of exhibits dedicated to the rich and sprawling history of mass transportation in New York City. Only scheduled to be open for two months, the exhibit was so popular that its run was continually extended – for the next thirteen years.

Governor Cuomo Announces Award of Key Contracts in LIRR Double Track Project

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that two design-build contracts have been awarded for work that will significantly advance the Long Island Rail Road’s Double Track project. When completed, the project will dramatically increase capacity of the Ronkonkoma Branch along 18 miles between Farmingdale and Ronkonkoma. The addition of the second track will allow the LIRR to provide more frequent off-peak service to the Ronkonkoma Branch in both directions and will increase flexibility and reduce delays associated with service disruptions.

MTA Arts & Design Adds 27 Acts to Music Under New York Program

MTA Arts & Design has invited 27 groups and performers to join the Music Under New York program (MTA MUSIC) following a competitive applications process and auditions that were held in May.

These 27 musical acts join a roster of more than 350 performers and groups that are hosted at select high-traffic areas in the New York City Transit system and at MTA commuter rail stations.

Governor Cuomo Announces New Pilot Programs for MTA Safety Technologies to Launch Later This Year

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that full pilot programs for two new MTA technologies aimed at improving customer and passenger safety – a pedestrian turn warning system and a collision avoidance system – will launch later this year. Based on the successful completion of the pilot programs, the technologies will roll out on a city-wide basis in the fourth quarter of 2016, and be installed on up to 1,600 buses beginning in mid-2018.

MTA Announces Service Plans for Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day is coming on Monday, May 30, which means the MTA will add extra trains tomorrow, Friday, May 27, to help New Yorkers get an early start on the long three-day weekend. On Memorial Day, most MTA services will operate on Sunday schedules. Details are below.

MTA Awards Contracts for Preliminary Engineering Work on Two Stations at Willets Point

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced that it has awarded $7.5 million in contracts for preliminary engineering work at two stations at Willets Point, Queens. The preliminary engineering work, which is expected to be completed within a year, will pave the way for major enhancements at both stations, and prepare the MTA to collaborate with the Port Authority as planning for the AirTrain at LaGuardia moves forward.

Governor Cuomo Announces Final Approval of $27 Billion, 5-Year MTA Capital Program, Advancement of Other Key MTA Transportation Initiatives

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that the $27 billion 2015-19 MTA Capital Program has received final approval from the Capital Plan Review Board. The passage of this Capital Program marks the largest investment in MTA infrastructure in state history, and outlines five years’ worth of vital investments to renew, enhance and expand the MTA network.

Metro-North to Restore Regular Train Service for Friday, May 20

Metro-North Railroad today announced that, as expected, it will return to its regular weekday schedule for Friday, May 20. The railroad has completed major but temporary repairs to a small section of the railroad’s Park Avenue Viaduct that was damaged in a massive fire at a street-level business at E. 118th Street on Tuesday evening.

The return to a full schedule was made possible by round-the-clock work on the part of dedicated employees who on Thursday safely completed the installation of six temporary steel columns to brace a column damaged in Tuesday’s fire.

Governor Cuomo Announces 75 State-of-the-Art Buses Hit the Streets in Queens

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced the arrival of the first of 75 new buses that are being deployed into service this year as part of a concentrated effort to address overcrowding and modernize the MTA. In March, the Governor announced the addition of 2,042 buses, equipped with Wi-Fi and USB charging ports, to the MTA fleet over the next five years, replacing 40 percent of the current fleet.
