MTA Begins Communications Blitz to Alert Riders to Possible Service Disruption
With MTA Chairman and CEO Thomas F. Prendergast in Washington, D.C., briefing members of Congress on the possibility that a labor action could result in the loss of LIRR service, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today began a communications blitz aimed at alerting New Yorkers to the potential for a service disruption as early as July 20.

MTA Chairman to Meet With Congress About Looming LIRR Strike
Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Chairman and CEO Thomas F. Prendergast today sent a letter to the leaders of Congress asking whether they intend to intervene in the ongoing labor dispute at the MTA Long Island Rail Road (LIRR). Eight unions representing 5,400 LIRR employees have threatened to walk off the job as early as Sunday, July 20, and only Congress has the authority to prevent those unions from paralyzing the nation's largest regional economy.

MTA Welcomes Involvement of National Mediation Board in Ongoing LIRR Labor Dispute

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced that it intends to participate in talks with LIRR unions next Tuesday that have been scheduled by the National Mediation Board.

“We are eager to get back to the bargaining table through the National Mediation Board on Tuesday,” said Anita Miller, MTA Director of Labor Relations. “We are hoping the unions will come prepared to engage in substantive negotiations on our latest fair and generous proposal, which meets the demands of current LIRR employees by offering 17% raises, including $22,000 in average back pay.”

MTA Details Service for Fourth of July Holiday
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) will offer extra railroad service on Thursday, July 3, to allow customers to get a head start a long Fourth of July weekend. On Friday, July 4, subways, buses, the LIRR and the Staten Island Railway will operate on a Saturday schedule, and Metro-North Railroad will operate on a Sunday/holiday schedule with extra trains added. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today established its Transportation Reinvention Commission, a special advisory body that will study challenges facing the MTA region in coming decades and recommend strategies to maintain, enhance and expand transportation services in light of growing ridership, shifting demographic trends and a changing climate.

Iris Weinshall Joins MTA Board

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced that Iris Weinshall will join the MTA Board effective July 1, assuming the seat currently occupied by Mark D. Lebow.

Weinshall was confirmed to the position today by the New York Senate after being recently nominated by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo. She had been recommended to Governor Cuomo by Mayor Bill de Blasio.

Two New Members Join MTA Board
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced that two new members are joining the MTA Board. New York City Transportation Commissioner Polly Trottenberg will assume the seat formerly occupied by former New York City Budget Director Mark Page. Neal Zuckerman of the Metro-North Railroad Commuter Council will take the non-voting seat formerly occupied by the Council’s Jim Blair.
