Governor Cuomo Announces $1.8 Billion Award to Build 676 New LIRR and Metro-North Rail Cars

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced that the Board of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has approved a contract with Kawasaki Rail Car, Inc. for up to $1.83 billion to design and build the next generation of rail cars for the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad. The MTA expects up to 676 cars will be assembled at Kawasaki’s plant in Yonkers and anticipates up to 1,500 people will be employed in New York State.

New Bus Service Coming to Brooklyn and Queens Starting This Weekend

Starting this Sunday and Monday, September 8-9, MTA customers will have new options for travel in Brooklyn and Queens, including a faster way to get to LaGuardia Airport.  This new and extended service was first announced last summer as part of a $29 million investment by the MTA.

MTA Police and Nassau County Police Arrest Man in Connection with Deadly Assault at Bellmore LIRR Station

 

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced that the MTA Police Department and the Nassau County Police Department, through a joint investigation, have arrested a 34-year-old Roosevelt, N.Y., man for his role in an assault at the Bellmore LIRR Station that led to the death of a 49-year-old Freeport man.

Deadline Approaches for App Developers Working with MTA Data

 

App developers with creative ideas for how to make commuting easier have just one week left to submit an app to App Quest 2013 (MTAAppQuest.com) a global apps challenge being jointly organized by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), AT&T, the Polytechnic Institute of New York University and ChallengePost.

App submissions are due at 5 p.m. on August 20. Winners will be announced this fall.

East Side Access Contract for Manhattan South Structures Awarded

MTA Secures $200 Million of Insurance Protection for Future Sandy-Like Storms

 

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced that it has secured $200 million of insurance protection that will help pay for future repairs for damage to its infrastructure in the event of a storm featuring destructive storm surges similar to those experienced during Superstorm Sandy. The insurance protection has been funded through the offering of “catastrophe bonds” by MetroCat Re Ltd., a special purpose insurer.
