Metro-North to Suspend Service at Noon; Other Service Cancellations, Suspensions Possible Throughout the Day

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) is advising commuters to stay home, with service cancellations increasing as the storm conditions continue to worsen.

Metro-North Railroad will be suspending all service at noon because of increasing winds and heavy snow accumulations; the last trains will arrive at Grant Central Terminal and other terminals at approximately noon. Customers should check www.mta.info for exact schedules.

Governor Cuomo Declares State of Emergency Beginning at Midnight Across New York

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today declared a state of emergency across all 62 counties in New York ahead of the extreme winter storm expected to bring heavy snowfall and high winds. The Governor also directed non-essential state employees impacted by the winter storm to stay home from work on Tuesday without having to charge accruals.

MTA Appoints NY State DOT Veteran Phil Eng as Chief Operating Officer

Metropolitan Transportation Authority Interim Executive Director Ronnie Hakim and Acting Board Chairman Fernando Ferrer today announced the appointment of New York State Department of Transportation veteran Phil Eng to serve as Chief Operating Officer of the MTA.

As COO, Eng will oversee major operating initiatives at all MTA agencies including the delivery of new fare payment systems and mobile ticketing apps, advertising contracts, technology integration, overall procurement strategy, oversight of best practices used across all agencies, and other key MTA priorities.

Governor Cuomo Announces MTA Police Charge Man With Hate Crimes for Graffiti Incidents at Penn Station

Governor Cuomo today announced that a man suspected of multiple incidents of bias graffiti at Pennsylvania Station was arrested and charged for committing a series of hate crimes, reinforcing that New York has zero tolerance for bigotry or discrimination in any form. Governor Cuomo Urges New Yorkers to Prepare for Winter Storm

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today urged New Yorkers to prepare for heavy snow which will impact the entire state, especially the Hudson Valley, New York City and Long Island regions late Wednesday, February 8 into Thursday, February 9. Heavy, wet snow, along with strong gusting winds are expected early Thursday morning, which will transition to dry, powdery snow Thursday afternoon. In anticipation of the winter storm, Governor Cuomo has directed state transportation authorities to take measures to ensure roadways remain as safe as possible for motorists across New York.

Governor Cuomo: This Is What New Yorkers Do -- We Turn Hate Into Love

A passenger aboard a northbound B Train recently observed a swastika drawn in green marker in the center of a United States flag affixed to one of the passenger cars. The swastika was then boxed out in a black marker and altered with the letters "L-O-V-E.” Due to the nature of the graffiti, this incident has been deemed possibly bias in nature and is being investigated as such.

Governor Cuomo said: "This is what New Yorker's do – we turn hate into love. That is our message to the nation and to the world. And we won't back down. Not now, not ever."

MTA Announces Appointment of Owen Monaghan as Chief of MTA Police Department

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced that Owen J. Monaghan has been appointed as the new Chief of Police of the MTA Police Department.

Chief Monaghan succeeds Chief Michael R. Coan, who led the MTA Police Department for eight and a half years, the longest serving police chief in department history.

Governor Cuomo Announces Veronique Hakim Will Serve as Interim Executive Director of the MTA

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo announced today that Veronique Hakim will serve as the interim Executive Director of the MTA while a seven-person committee conducts a nationwide search for a permanent Chair and Chief Executive Officer. Hakim is a lifelong transportation professional who has spent more than 24 years at the MTA, including serving as President of New York City Transit since December 2015. MTA Vice Chairman Fernando Ferrer will serve as Acting Chairman during the search for a permanent replacement.

MTA Board Keeps Base Fare Flat; Approves Lowest Fare, Toll Increases since 2009
