MTA Officials Break Floor of Grand Central Terminal, Opening the Way for Stairways and Escalators To Long Island Rail Road Concourse

MTA officials began the process of breaking through the floor of Grand Central Terminal today, marking the start of construction on one of several access points that will connect Grand Central Terminal to a huge new concourse for Long Island Rail Road passengers being built below. The concourse being built is part of the East Side Access construction project, which will bring Long Island Rail Road trains into Grand Central.

Fulton Center Among Elite Group of U.S. Projects to Wins British Construction Industry International Project of the Year Award

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced that the Fulton Center in Manhattan’s Financial District has joined an elite group of projects in the United States to win the prestigious British Construction Industry Award for the International Project of the Year. The Fulton Center joined Boston’s 'Big Dig, ' the Hearst Building in Manhattan and Dames Point Container Terminal in Jacksonville, Florida as winners of the esteemed honor.

Statement from MTA Chairman and CEO Thomas F. Prendergast

The new MTA Capital Program includes $535 million over the next four years for design, planning, environmental review, property acquisition, utility relocation and construction preparations to bring the Second Avenue Subway to East Harlem. This reflects the work we can realistically accomplish in the next four years given the regulatory and engineering constraints on heavy construction in a densely populated section of Manhattan.

MTA in Motion for Mets, Monsters and Marathoners

The New York Mets will be taking on the Kansas City Royals in the 2015 World Series and MTA trains and buses will be ready to serve fans headed to Citi Field starting Friday, October 30 for Games 3, 4, and 5 (if necessary). Former MTA Chairman E. Virgil Conway Dies at 85

E. Virgil Conway, who served as both Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) chairman and as a member of the MTA Board, died Wednesday in Southampton, New York. He was 85.

After finding success as both an attorney and a banker, Virgil began his tenure with the MTA Board as our Westchester representative. In 1995, he was asked by then-Governor George E. Pataki to take on the responsibility of chairman. He continued in that role until March 2001, serving as the seventh chairman of the MTA.

Nineteen Dogs Graduate from MTA Police Training

Nineteen canine police officers in the Class of 2015 graduated from MTA Police explosives detection and anti-terrorism training this morning in a ceremony at Grand Central Terminal.

The dogs and their human partners trained on a 72-acre rural campus in Stormville, N.Y., in Dutchess County. A new canine training academy built on the site is almost completed and will soon be dedicated.

MTA Ready to Serve Baseball Fans Headed to National League Championship Series

With the New York Mets getting ready to take on the Chicago Cubs in the 2015 National League Championship Series, MTA trains and buses are ready to serve fans headed to Citi Field for Games 1 and 2, which are scheduled to start at 8:07 p.m. tomorrow, October 17, and Sunday, October 18. The MTA will also provide service to Games 6 and 7, if they are necessary, on Saturday, October 24, and Sunday, October 25.

To avoid waiting in lines after the game, the MTA recommends customers buy round-trip LIRR tickets or MetroCard fares in advance.

Governor Cuomo, Mayor de Blasio and MTA Chairman Prendergast Announce Agreement on Funding for MTA Capital Program

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, Mayor Bill de Blasio and MTA Chairman Tom Prendergast today announced that an agreement has been reached on the remaining funding for the MTA Capital Program. New York State has committed to provide $8.3 billion, and New York City has committed to provide $2.5 billion. The program, which totals $26.1 billion, outlines the next five years’ worth of vital investments to renew, enhance and expand the MTA network. This marks the largest investment in MTA infrastructure in history.

Three Winners Drive to Victory in MTA Second Avenue Subway Simulator Tournament

MTA Capital Construction held the championship round of its Second Avenue Subway simulator tournament at the Community Information Center on Saturday. Six finalists competed as virtual train operators (two each from the 8-12, 13-20, and 210-plus age groups) to see who clocked the fastest time while providing the safest, smoothest ride for their virtual passengers.
