MTA Announces Service Plans for Presidents’ Day

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today offered details about service for Presidents’ Day, Monday, February 15, and for the long holiday weekend that begins on Friday, February 12.

MTA’s Finance Director, Recognized for Expertise, to Assume Leadership Role At National Government Financial Management Organization

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced that Patrick J. McCoy, the MTA’s Director of Finance, has been named President-Elect of the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA), effective this coming May. McCoy is the MTA official responsible for managing the agency’s $36.3 billion bond portfolio and related capital markets activities to ensure that the MTA has consistent access to low cost capital necessary in financing the bond funded portion of its Capital Program.

Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad Report Big Ridership Increases

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced that ridership increased significantly on the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad in 2015, giving a significant boost to the economic health of the regions they serve. Metro-North reported all-time record ridership of 86.1 million customers, an increase of 1.6% over 2014, while the Long Island Rail Road remained the busiest regional railroad in the nation, carrying 87.6 million customers, a 2.1% increase over the prior year and the railroad’s highest total since 1949.

Children’s Book Author, Illustrator Ashley Bryan Creates Latest Graphics Poster for MTA Arts & Design

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today announced the release of a new MTA Arts & Design graphics arts poster, titled “New York Voices,” by artist and children’s book author Ashley Bryan that will be installed in hundreds of subway stations and cars throughout the New York City Transit (NYCT) system.

The colorful poster depicts two groups of singers with their arms linked, mouths opened in mid-song. It is based on an original painting by Bryan, who said he was celebrating the variety of voices that create the soundtrack of New York City.

MTA Approves Final Major Contract for East Side Access Manhattan Caverns

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Board today approved the final major contract for the East Side Access project, which will build and finish four platforms and eight tracks for the new Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) terminal some 100 feet below Grand Central Terminal.

Under another contract awarded last month, a tunnel approach will be built and a bridge rebuilt in Sunnyside, Queens. The total value of both contracts is nearly three-quarters of a billion dollars.

Governor Declares State of Emergency for New York City, Long Island and Lower Hudson Valley as Winter Storm Hits Region

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today declared a state of emergency for New York City as well as Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, Orange and Putnam Counties as a major Nor’easter storm continues to move up the east coast and impact the region. In addition to the State of Emergency, MTA bus service will suspend operation in New York City at noon today, and remain suspended until further notice.

Governor Cuomo Announces Travel Ban Effective at 2:30 PM Today

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today announced a travel ban on all local and state roads in New York City, Long Island, and the Port Authority’s trans-Hudson crossings, effective at 2:30 p.m. today. Additionally, the MTA will begin suspending service at 4:00 p.m. on the LIRR, Metro-North Railroad, Staten Island Railway, and above-ground subway lines in New York City. All bus services in New York City remain suspended until further notice.

Governor Cuomo Announces Downstate Travel Ban to Cease at 7AM Sunday

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo this evening held a storm briefing to discuss the winter storm and the reopening of roadways and public transportation in the downstate region. The existing travel ban for all state and local roads in New York City, the Long Island Expressway and Northern State Parkway, and the Port Authority’s trans-Hudson crossings will be lifted at 7:00 a.m. tomorrow, Sunday, January 24. The ban remains in effect until that time and only authorized emergency vehicles, hazard vehicles and critical healthcare personnel will be permitted.

Governor Cuomo Issues Update on MTA Service Suspensions

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo this morning issued an update on service suspensions for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. The MTA will restore bus, subway and regional railroad service as conditions warrant throughout the day Sunday. Customers should check www.mta.info for service status updates before beginning their journeys, since conditions remain subject to change. The travel ban has been officially lifted as of 7 a.m. this morning, and the Port Authority’s bridges and tunnels opened at that time without incident.
