Raymond Diaz Named MTA Director of Security

Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) Chairman and CEO Thomas F. Prendergast announced today that Raymond Diaz, former chief of the New York City Police Department Transit Bureau, is joining the MTA as Director of Security, effective January 6, 2014.

MTA Prepares for Weekend Storm

MTA New York City Transit, MTA Metro-North Railroad, MTA Long Island Rail Road, and MTA Bridges and Tunnels are preparing for the arrival of a winter storm this weekend that has the potential to blanket the metropolitan area with anywhere from two to ten inches of snow.  Customers are urged to use caution while walking on outdoor platforms and stairs.

LIRR & Metro-North Impose 24-Hour Ban on Alcohol from Noon Saturday Until Noon Sunday to Ensure Safe Travel during SantaCon Celebration

To maintain orderly travel during this weekend’s SantaCon event, alcohol will not be permitted on Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North trains and stations from 12 noon on Saturday, December 14 through 12 noon on Sunday, December 15.

MTA Police Officers will be on duty at Grand Central Terminal, Penn Station and at train stations and on trains to enforce this restriction. The police will confiscate illegal liquor and issue summonses carrying fines up to $50 or 30 days imprisonment or both. Violators may also be subject to ejection from the train or station by police.

MTA Announces New Photography Exhibition: ‘Intersection’

Seven large-scale photographs showing thrilling and unique views looking down at brightly colored Manhattan intersections are now on display in the Bowling Green subway station. The exhibit is the latest installation of MTA Arts for Transit and Urban Design’s large-scale photography exhibitions, which are posted four times a year within New York’s public transportation system.

MTA Announces Service Plans for Four-Day Thanksgiving Weekend

Trains and buses operated by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) will operate on special schedules on Wednesday, November 27, through Sunday, December 1, to accommodate the unique travel demands of Thanksgiving weekend. During the same time period, MTA Bridges and Tunnels will suspend maintenance at its nine crossings to facilitate increased travel.

Second Avenue Subway Reaches Major Milestones

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced today that the Second Avenue Subway project, the largest expansion of the New York City subway network in generations, has reached major new milestones in its on-time, on-budget progress to serve customers on Manhattan’s East Side by the end of 2016. All blasting operations for Phase 1 of the Second Avenue Subway Project are complete and heavy construction to excavate and create the 96th St station reached substantial completion November 5.

MTA and NYCEDC Announce Selection of Developer for Large Site on East Gun Hill Road in the Bronx

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) and New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC) today announced that the MTA intends to surrender an approximately 550,000-square foot site at the intersection of East Gun Hill Road and the New England Thruway in the Bronx to Gun Hill Square, LLC, a joint venture between Grid Properties, Inc., and Gotham Organization, Inc., to build a pedestrian-oriented retail destination with 260,000 square feet of leasable space, and, if public financing is available, up to 100 units of senior housing.

MTA Releases 2014-2017 Financial Plan
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) today released its Final Proposed 2014 Budget and Four-Year Financial Plan. The plan includes the addition of new cost reduction measures and recognizes favorable operating results and tax revenue re-estimates that have taken place since the preliminary budget was released in July. The MTA expects that the combination of increased cost cutting, lower expenses and higher operating revenues will allow the agency to reduce by almost half the previously projected fare and toll increases scheduled for 2015 and 2017.
