MTA Bus Mergers Completed

MTA Bus Company merged the routes of Triboro Coach Corporation into its operations on February 20, 2006.

The move completes the consolidation of the operations of the seven private bus lines that operated under franchises for the City of New York into MTA Bus that began with merger of Liberty Lines Express on January 3, 2005. It proceeded with the merger of the services operated by Queens Surface Corporation on February 27; New York Bus Service on July 1, Command Bus on December 5, Jamaica Bus on January 30, 2006 and Green Bus Line on January 9, 2006.

Both express and local buses formerly operated by Triboro Coach are identified with a blue and white MTA Bus logo and will stop at all of the current Triboro Coach stops. For the immediate future, routes and route numbers will remain the same.

As part of the consolidation plan, MTA Bus has purchased 317 express buses, of which more than 200 have been placed in service; an additional order of 140 express buses is also expected, with delivery completed by the end of 2006. In addition MTA Bus has purchased 284 buses for local service, with delivery beginning in mid-2006 and completed in the first quarter of 2007. These new buses are more fuel efficient and environmentally friendly, offering superior ride quality and customer amenities. These new buses are all ADA accessible, adding a new dimension of service to many of the routes operated by the former private bus companies.

With the mergers completed, MTA Bus now operates the 11th largest bus fleet in North America, serving more than 400,000 daily riders.

Fares on the former franchise bus routes are now the same as those for MTA New York City Transit and MTA Long Island Bus: $2 for local buses at all times and $5 for express buses. Fares include a free transfer within a two-hour window to any subway or local bus, or to an express bus with payment of a fare differential. The Reduced-Fare Program for senior citizens and people with disabilities will also continue.

Local bus fares are payable in coins or with either Pay-Per-Ride MetroCard or a 7-Day or 30-Day Unlimited Ride MetroCard or 1-Day Fun Pass. Express bus fares are payable in coins, with a Pay-Per-Ride MetroCard, or with a 7-Day Express Bus Plus MetroCard.

MTA Bus is instituting new maintenance programs to improve reliability. The procedures are based upn the successful programs developed by NYCT. Reliability (based upon miles traveled between in-service breakdowns) has improved at NYCT by more than 50 percent over the past 10 years, and buses are routinely completing more than 98 percent of their scheduled trips.
