Bx41 Webster Avenue SBS

The Corridor

The Bx41 Webster Avenue SBS Corridor extends 5.3 miles from The Hub (East 149th Street) to Williams Bridge (East Gun Hill Road). The Bx41 currently carries approximately 22,000 daily riders. Webster Avenue presents a strong market for a rapid bus service with approximately 200,000 residents within a 10-minute walk of the corridor, 61 percent who currently commute by transit. Additionally 71 percent of households in this same area do not own a car.

Project Description

Bx41 SBS service will begin June 30, 2013. The overall goals of the project are to speed buses and increase reliability, improve safety for all corridor users, and support overall community needs, while not materially affecting traffic and parking. The project team has studied corridor and service design alternatives that take into account transit operations, pedestrian amenities, traffic operations, and on-street parking/curb access, among other factors. Transit operations focus on improving bus speed and reliability, to benefit both SBS and local buses. The project looks at increasing total pedestrian space and improving pedestrian safety at intersections along the corridor. A detailed traffic modeling effort will ensure that the corridor maintains appropriate traffic flows and speeds while accommodating local vehicular circulation. Another major consideration is minimizing the loss of parking and delivery space that is essential to both businesses and residents on Webster Avenue.
