Holiday Light Show Illuminates Grand Central

It’s hard not to look up and take in the beauty of the Main Concourse at Grand Central Terminal, but during the holidays the view is even more illuminating.  Vivid colors, shapes and animations have transformed the area as the new “Centennial Holiday Light Show” displays on the windows above the Terminal’s west balcony.

The Holiday Light Show is on display daily through December 26th with 30-minute shows running continuously each evening from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. Each half hour comprises four parts, including holiday- and train-inspired segments.

Through MTA Metro-North Railroad, Grand Central has teamed with Toshiba, a world-leading manufacturer and solutions provider of advanced electronics and systems, to create a state-of-the-art light show never seen before in the Terminal. Each of the three monumental windows on the west wall contains 129 separate panes.  Each pane will work as an individual “pixel” of light. During the show, the 387 pixels create colorful, shape-shifting designs.  Toshiba has sponsored development, installation and presentation of the show.

“As the home of Metro-North Railroad and a magnet to millions of people who visit during the holiday season, Grand Central is the perfect place to have New York’s most exciting new seasonal light show,” says Metro-North President Howard Permut.  “We are grateful to Toshiba for producing this gift to the city as a colorful end to our Centennial celebration in 2013.”

“Holiday light shows at Grand Central have been favorite events here for many years,” said Randall J. Fleischer, Vice President, Grand Central Terminal and Corporate Development.  “We’re happy to have partnered with Toshiba to bring it back in a whole new way, brightening the Main Concourse and giving people another reason to visit the Terminal during the holidays.”

The Grand Central Centennial Holiday Light Show is one of three marquee events taking place in the Terminal this holiday season.  The Grand Central Centennial Holiday Fair is open to shoppers every day through December 25 in Vanderbilt Hall. The New York Transit Museum’s annual Holiday Train Show is open in the Museum’s Gallery Annex.   In addition, a holiday edition of the Terminal’s popular Grand Central Rewards shopping program runs through the holiday season, offering limited edition Centennial gifts to shoppers who spend a minimum of $50 at Grand Central retailers.
