Full No. 1 Service Restored in Morningside Heights

When an irresistible force meets an immovable object, well, like the old song says; something’s gotta give.  In this case it was a portion of the steel structure that supports the tracks of the 1 Subway Broadway Local, which was shifted about two inches out of alignment after a cement truck struck the elevated structure at 133rd Street, Wednesday evening.
Service was restored to the line as of 3:30 Thursday afternoon. Earlier in the day, when repairs were being made, Downtown 1 Subway service ran express between 137 St and 96 St, skipping 125 St, 116 St, 110 St and 103 St. Downtown customers were provided with free shuttle buses or told to use the M4 and M104, or take a ride to 96 St and then back to ride uptown.  Customers were also advised to use the  A SubwayC Subway lines as an alternate.  
The collision occurred at about 5:10 p.m., but the real issue was discovered several minutes later when an alert train operator called into the Rail Control Center and reported a problem with the South Ferry-bound local tracks at 133rd Street.  His call sent Track and Infrastructure maintenance crews to the scene, where they discovered the damage caused by the errant truck.  
“This was a really heads up call by one of our employees who, in this case, felt something and said something, reporting a potentially dangerous condition,” said MTA New York City Transit President Carmen Bianco.
The collision took place steps from the Manhattanville Bus Depot and was called into 911 by a passerby.  He reported that the vehicle hit the structure, which is clearly marked for a height of 10 feet.  Additionally, there is a sign prior to the intersection which warns of the 10-foot clearance.  The driver reported the incident to the local precinct sometime after the incident.
Last year, more than 100 incidents were recorded of over-height vehicles coming into contact with NYC Transit subway structures.
