Make the MTA Your Designated Driver: Extra Service for New Year's Eve
Trains will operate all night long on New Year's Eve, Friday December 31, so take the train to the party and get home safe.
On Friday, both Metro-North and the LIRR will operate extra outbound trains in the early afternoon for workers getting a jump start on the holiday.
MTA New York City Transit and MTA Bus will run on a Saturday schedule on New Year's Eve. Customers should check Saturday schedules, lines and routes.
Customers are advised to use subway stations at 57th Street and 59th Street and walk to Times Square. Also, the 42nd Street-Grand Central (S) shuttle will operate all night.
Because so many streets are closed in midtown, revelers should not use buses to get to Times Square. Overnight bus service in the area will be restored in the area when the streets reopen.
For revelers, both the LIRR and Metro-North will have plenty of additional trains in the afternoon and evening for people heading to parties and restaurants in New York City. When it's finally time to go home, there will be additional service in both directions into the wee hours of the morning.
Buy your round-trip train tickets as well as MetroCards for connecting subway and bus service in advance at your boarding station and avoid lines in Grand Central and Penn Station after a night of partying! Travelers on Metro-North must show a ticket before boarding train at Grand Central after midnight.
And as in prior years, open containers of alcoholic beverages will not be allowed on any subways, trains, stations or platforms from noon on New Year's Eve through noon on New Year's Day. MTA Police and NYPD will enforce this restriction.
On Saturday, January 1, New Year's Day, the LIRR will be on a weekend/holiday schedule and Metro-North will be on a Sunday schedule.
On Sunday, January 2, both railroads also will operate on a regular Sunday schedule.
Regular weekday schedules resume Monday January 3 on LIRR and Metro-North.
December monthly passes will be accepted on both railroads for one courtesy ride through 10 AM Tuesday, January 4, 2011.
The Staten Island Railway will operate on a Saturday schedule on New Year's Eve and New Year's Day.
