(Cashless) All-Electronic Tolling Pilot Moves Forward

<p>MTA Bridges and Tunnels is getting ready for the first phase of its all-electronic tolling (cashless) pilot project, when the gates are removed from E-ZPass lanes at the Henry Hudson Bridge in mid-January.</p> <p>The all-electronic tolling pilot was announced in 2010 by MTA Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Jay Walder. Along with a new lane configuration, personnel have installed state-of-the-art camera equipment, new computer software and overhead gantries at the Henry Hudson to get ready for gateless operations.</p> <p>In the gateless phase of the pilot motorists with E-ZPass will be able to drive through toll lanes without stopping for the gate arm to go up. Cash will continue to be collected in this phase by Bridge and Tunnel officers at specifically marked cash toll lanes.</p> <p>The second "cashless" phase of the project, in which a camera snaps a picture of the license plate and drivers are sent invoices based on DMV records, is expected to begin in 2012. </p> <p>MTA Bridges and Tunnels President Jim Ferrara says the new traffic pattern of three lanes on the lower level leading into Manhattan will result in a smoother transition for drivers coming onto the bridge from the two-lane Henry Hudson Parkway. The three upper level lanes on the bridge leading into the Bronx will remain the same.</p><p>The Henry Hudson Bridge connects the Riverdale section of the Bronx to the Inwood section of Manhattan.
