Our App of the Week is a bus-focused iPhone app that provides users with scheduled departures, even when offline.

App of the Week: Bus New York City

Bus New York City is designed to help New Yorkers and visitors alike find out where and when to catch a bus, or find out about a new route to a specific destination. For bus routes where MTA Bus time has been installed (so far the B63, but more coming soon), the app provides real-time departure information and bus position info using data from the MTA.

The app's features include:

  • The ability to add stops to a favorites list to quickly find out when the next buses are due to arrive at a selected stop.
  • Pinpoint your current position, or search maps for any location, in order to find nearby bus stops.
  • View bus routes integrated onto the map.
  • Receive updated news that might affect a trip and status updates for buses, subways, railroads, and the MTA's bridges and tunnels.

Bus New York City is a brand new app. It was launched this year by Will Ryan and his team at London-based Electric Labs. Will visits New York City a few times a year and found it was easier to become familiar with the subway than it was with buses. "I was staying in a new neighborhood in Manhattan and wanted to find out how to better use the local bus network and was surprised to find there were no apps that could help me," he said. "This is when I came up with the idea for Bus New York City. By chance, the MTA had recently opened up their data, so it was a perfect opportunity." He had built bus apps for London, and so he decided to make one for New York. The app took about 3 months to build.

The app includes all routes operated by New York City Transit, the MTA Bus Company and MTA Long Island Bus. It costs $1.99 and is available via iTunes.
