MTA Wishes A Safe Holiday Weekend To All

B & T will suspend all routine maintenance work beginning Friday, May 27th at Noon through the end of the morning rush on Monday, May 31st.

Memorial Day weekend is traditionally among the busiest travel weekends at B&T's seven bridges and two tunnels. During the 2010 Memorial Day weekend, some 4 million motorists used the agency's crossings.

There are two spots where construction work cannot be lifted due to long-term projects. The Bronx-Whitestone Bridge will have one of three northbound lanes to the Bronx closed as part of a roadway re-decking project at the bridge's Bronx approach, and one northbound lane to the Bronx at the Henry Hudson Bridge is also closed.

To make travel even smoother, motorists are advised to:

  • Use E-ZPass. Drivers should make sure the tag is properly secured on the windshield. If the equipment cannot read the tag, the toll gate arm will not go up, causing delays. At the Henry Hudson Bridge, where a gateless pilot program in underway, a violation notice may be given if the tag is not read and the car's license plate is not on file.
  • Cash customers can speed their trips by having exact toll amounts ready.
  • Sign up for e-mail and text alerts at www.mta.info for information on accidents or delays at MTA crossings.
  • Check B&T's Travel Time information on the MTA website before you leave home to see how traffic is moving.

"We wish all our customers a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend," said Bridges and Tunnels Vice President and Chief of Operations James Fortunato.
