New Transfer at Court Square

<p>A new transfer links the G Line at Long Island City-Court Square with the Court Square Station on the 7 line and the Court Square-23rd Street Station on the E and M lines.</p>
<p>A ribbon-cutting ceremony this week marked the expansion of the Court Square Subway Station Complex to include a more convenient transfer option for Queens riders. This transfer is projected to benefit approximately 20,000 customers each weekday significantly impacting a growing residential area. A major part of the project was Citigroup's construction of a direct enclosed free transfer between the Court Square 7 and Long Island City-Court Square Stations on the E, G and M. Customers no longer need to leave the system and re-enter with their MetroCards to make this transfer.</p>
<p><div style="float:left; margin-right:10px;"><img src="/sites/default/files/archive/imgs/courtsquare.jpg" alt="Long Island City-Court Square station photo"></div>The new transfer area features two escalators, three ADA elevators, a transfer stairway between the G and 7 mezzanines and a stairway connecting the Court Square 7 station's mezzanine with the northeast corner of Jackson Avenue and 23rd Street. A passageway and moving sidewalk already connects the Long Island City-Court Square Station G with the Court Square-23rd Street Station E, M.</p>
<p>With the opening of the transfer, the 7 line station has been renamed Court Square, in line with the MTA's policy of rationalizing station names so that all platforms in a station complex have the same name, reducing customer confusion. The name of the station serving the E and M trains has already been changed to Court Square-23rd Street.</p>
<p>"The creation of this complex will facilitate travel for customers heading to and from Queens and give choices in the case of a disruption on any of the lines," said NYC Transit Thomas F. Prendergast. "This is very similar to our project in Downtown Brooklyn, where we linked two stations, Jay Street (A, C, F) and Lawrence Street (R) into the Jay Street-MetroTech complex and improved travel options for thousands of subway riders from day one. There is also a project underway to provide a free transfer between the Sixth Avenue Line to the uptown 6 at the Broadway-Lafayette and Bleecker Street stations."</p>
<p>The total cost of the project (including design, construction and support costs) is approximately $47.6 million, of which NYC Transit paid $13.9 million with the remainder funded by Citigroup. NYC Transit will be undertaking a capital project scheduled for award later this month to make platforms in the 7 line station ADA compliant. This work includes full platform replacement, platform windscreen replacement and the installation of ADA boarding areas, tactile warning strips and signage.</p>
<p>The subway improvement was a mandatory requirement of the NYC Zoning Code for the development of the second phase of an office complex that consists of a 15-story building situated just north of the complex.</p>
