"On June 23, 1965, the Fort Hamilton Playground opened in the shadow of the new Verrazano bridge. Triborough Bridge & Tunnel Commissioner, Robert Moses, had promised the residents of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn some community facilities and the playground was one of them. At the opening ceremonies he said "In the process of accomodating cars, the family which has no cars of its own ... which has grown accustomed to seeing them buzz by in gasoline gullies, is entitled to fringe benefits in the form of recreation, landscaping and beauty ...These are the reasons why this little playground is significant. It is a symbol of the future."
