App of the Week: MTA Information

For those who use a Windows Phone 7 smartphone, MTA Information offers a full menu of information to make it easier to ride with us. It's our App of the Week, and it's free.

MTA Information App

MTA Information aims to be a versatile and comprehensive companion for New Yorkers traveling by subway, bus, railroad or MTA Bridges and Tunnels. Here are some of the features:

  • Easily accessible schedules for all subway lines, the Long Island Rail Road, Metro-North Railroad and Staten Island Railway. Bus schedules are planned for a future update of the app.
  • A convenient point-to-point trip planner for subways and buses (pictured).
  • Real-time service status updates for all railroads, subways and buses as well as MTA Bridges and Tunnels. Before you leave for a trip, you can double-check to see if there are any service disruptions.

Perhaps best of all, if one's Windows Phone 7 smartphone has location service enabled, this app can help you find all the subway stations near your current location. When you identify the station you want to reach, simply tap for directions to the station.

The app has a message board integrated right into the app, so users can write and submit suggestions and questions to the app developer and to other users with only a few taps on the screen. The app was launched last November by Michael M. Mann, a frequent subway and bus rider from Queens who has created other apps as well, including a New York City maps app, and an app that helps users keep track of alternate side parking regulations. "I needed the functionality for myself, so I created it so others can use it as well," Mann said. "I monitor the message board closely, and I follow up on all the suggestions."

Downloading the MTA Information app to your Windows Phone 7 is free of charge.
