Randall's Island has been a home for sports events since 1936, when the old Downing Stadium opened to host Jesse Owens' famous Olympic trials. The stadium was also once home to iconic soccer team, the New York Cosmos. Today, Icahn Stadium continues to host a full slate of amateur and professional track and field events, concerts and Cirque du Soleil.

For those who prefer to be a bit more active, the Randall's Island Golf Center, renovated in 2008, provides a two-tier indoor/outdoor, 82-stall driving range, a 36-hole mini-golf course, grass tees, a short game area with sand bunker, and PGA instructors. The 25-acre complex also has nine batting cages for aspiring big leaguers, and after a few putts or swings, you can unwind at the Golf Center's Beer Garden and Grill.

Randall's Island is also home to the SPORTIME Randall's Island Tennis Center (212-427-6150, sportimeny.com/randallsisland). Opened in 2009, the Tennis Center features 20 courts, along with a cafe, pro shop, fitness facilities and locker rooms. Lessons are offered and from May-;October, 10 courts are reserved for NYC Parks Tennis Permit holders during the daylight hours. The Tennis Center is also the home to the NYC Sportimes of the World Team Tennis League and the John McEnroe Tennis Academy.
