'Tis the Season to Take the Train -; and the LIRR Is Adding Extra Service Friday, Dec. 21 & Christmas Eve, Dec. 24

MTA Long Island Rail Road has unwrapped a holiday schedule featuring 10 extra trains to help customers heading home early Friday afternoon, December 21, and again on Monday, Christmas Eve. The additional service from Penn Station will begin each day at 12:46 PM and run through 3:48 PM on six branches of the Railroad.

So if you’re traveling for the holiday and want to get an early start or do last minute shopping, the LIRR is the way to go. Here are the extra trains being added to the schedule on those days:

Ronkonkoma Branch

  • 12:46 PM stopping at Woodside, Jamaica, Mineola, Hicksville and all stops to Ronkonkoma
  • 1:38 PM stopping at Woodside, Jamaica, Mineola, Hicksville and all stops to Ronkonkoma

Babylon Branch

  • 2:32 PM express to Lynbrook, then all stops to Babylon
  • 3:00 PM stopping at Jamaica, Rockville Centre, then all stops to Babylon
  • 3:31 PM express to Rockville Centre, then all stops to Babylon

With large numbers of customers taking advantage of the earlier departures, the LIRR will combine two closely-scheduled evening Babylon trains into one. The 5:59 PM from Penn Station will be cancelled and those customers accommodated by the next scheduled departure, the 6:05 PM train, which will run express to Merrick as usual, then make all local stops to Babylon.

Port Jefferson Branch (to Huntington)

  • 1:31 PM to Port Jefferson will have an added stop at Jamaica.
  • 2:08 PM stopping at Jamaica, Mineola, then all stops to Huntington
  • 2:29 PM stopping at Forest Hills, Kew Gardens, Jamaica, New Hyde Park, then all stops to Huntington
  • 3:24 PM stopping at Jamaica, Mineola, Westbury, Hicksville.

Port Washington Branch

  • 3:40 PM stopping at Woodside, Flushing-Main St., then all stops to Port Washington.

Far Rockaway Branch

  • 3:48 PM stopping at Locust Manor, Laurelton, Rosedale, Valley Stream, then all stops to Far Rockaway.

Extra Weekend Service Continues

As it has since the weekend after Thanksgiving, the LIRR is also running extra trains over the weekends of December 22-23 and December 29-30 to make travel to and from New York City more convenient for Christmas shopping, touring, dining and entertainment.

Port Washington Branch

Eight extra trains are being added to Saturday and Sunday schedule four westbound trains between 9 AM and 1 PM and four eastbound trains between 4 PM and 8 PM.

Port Jefferson Branch

The LIRR will add one overnight train between Penn Station and Huntington to accommodate customers taking in late night events in the city during the holidays.

Babylon Branch

The LIRR will add one overnight train between Penn Station and Babylon to accommodate customers taking in late night events in the city during the holidays.

Long Beach Branch

Eight extra trains are being added to the weekend schedule -; four westbound trains between 9 AM and 1 PM and four eastbound trains between 4 PM and 8 PM.

Ronkonkoma Branch

Three westbound trains between Farmingdale and Penn Station will be added to Saturday and Sunday schedules between 10 AM and 1 PM and three westbound trains between Penn Station and Farmingdale will be added to the weekend schedules between 4 PM and 7 PM. These particular trains were added with the started with the new November 12 timetable and after the holidays will remain part of the regular schedule to permanently enhance service along this busy corridor.

Family Fare Discount Begins Christmas Eve Starting at PM Peak

Beginning with the PM Peak on Christmas Eve, December 24, the Railroad kicks off its annual Family Fare Program during Off-Peak and PM Peak periods each day through New Year’s Day. Family Fare allows as many as four children ages 5-11 to ride for the advance purchase fare of 75 cents per child each way when accompanied by a fare-paying adult or guardian. Children under 5 ride free on the LIRR. Regular fares remain in effect during AM Peak hours.

Christmas Day Service

On Christmas Day, the LIRR will be operating a holiday train schedule with Off-Peak fares and Family Fares offered throughout the day. The Railroad returns to a regular weekday schedule on Wednesday, December 26.

Buy Your Ticket in Advance

To ensure easy rail travel during the holiday, customers are advised to purchase tickets before you go. Round trip tickets, including MetroCards for connecting subway and bus service, can be purchased in advance in order to save time and avoid lines at LIRR ticket windows and New York City Transit MetroCard windows and ticket machines.
