'Tis the Season to Take the Train - and the LIRR Is Adding Extra Service for Extended New Year's Holiday Weekend

MTA Long Island Rail Road will provide additional trains to and from Penn Station during the extended New Year's holiday period beginning Friday afternoon December 28 through New Year's Day, Tuesday, January 1. The extra service being added to the regular schedules include:

  • December 28: Eight (8) additional eastbound afternoon trains on Friday, December 28 to accommodate customers leaving work early.
  • December 29 & 30: Fourteen (14) extra trains on Saturday, December 29 and again on Sunday, December 30 for customers heading to and from Manhattan for the holiday sites, entertainment and shopping.
  • December 31: Eight (8) additional eastbound afternoon trains from Penn Station on New Year's Eve, Monday, December 31;
  • December 31: Eighteen (18) additional westbound trains to Penn Station beginning at 4:55 PM on New Year's Eve.
  • January 1: Fourteen (14) extra early morning eastbound trains returning from the city on Tuesday, January 1, New Year's Day.

Alcohol Ban

As in prior years, open alcoholic beverage containers will not be allowed on LIRR trains, platforms and at stations from 12 Noon on New Year's Eve, December 31, 2011 through 12 Noon on New Year's Day, January 1, 2013. MTA Police will enforce this restriction.

Buy Tickets Early

The LIRR advises customers to purchase round trip tickets, including MetroCards for connecting subway and bus service, in advance in order to save time and avoid lines at LIRR ticket windows and New York City Transit MetroCard windows and ticket machines.

Family Fare on PM Peak Trains December 28 & December 31

During PM Peak periods on Friday, December 28 and on New Year's Eve, Monday, December 31, discounted Family Fare tickets are available. As many four children, ages 5-11, can ride for the advance purchase fare of 75 cents per child each way when accompanied by a fare-paying adult or guardian. Children under 5 ride free on the LIRR. Regular fares remain in effect during AM Peak hours.

Wednesday, January 2: Regular Service Resumes

The LIRR will return to its regular weekday schedule on Wednesday, January 2, 2013.

December Monthly Passes

The December monthly commutation pass will be accepted for one courtesy ride only after midnight on December 31 and up until 10:00 AM on Wednesday, January 2, 2013.
